with the new oled tech coming does`nt this look like coffin time for the bulky big screens?

in terms of energy efficiency and picture quality they are far more superior i.e the oled from lgs contrast ratio just kills plasmas performance which it prides itself on compared to lcds. when the prices come down (if vat doesnt stay at 20%!) we may say bye bye to plasma dont you think max! []

I can't see it happening for a very long while. OLED - and especially large screen OLED _ is going to be difficult to make (and thus expensive) for a good while yet

In my view (I repeat, in my view) plasma will remain the best affordable viewing option for some time.
Just as CD will remain the best affordable source for music playback.

Widespread adoption of OLED and 24bit music is still some way off.

£1500 for a 15in TV - yeah, plummeting.

No, speccy, I haven't.

We are getting the 3D Philips '8000 series TV in, but at the moment there are no 3D packs (either for review or in shops); there's no point us reviewing just the set's 2D capability, so once the 3D packs (glasses plus transmitter unit) are available, we'll get testing. Philips expects that to be very shortly, it said on Friday.

Andrew Everard:The little 12in one was about £2500 IIRC.

It was £3500 when it first came into the market, later dropped its price rapidly as no one was buying them.

The LG OLED TV is getting some excellent reviews for its picture quality, with some saying that it's as good as the Kuro (although it's not fair to compare a 15-inch TV with the 50-inch one!).

I think it'll take atleast 2-3 years (provided LG doesn't abandon it like Sony did) before OLED TVs with sensible size & price come into the market.

Andrew Everard:
Pindi:OLED might become the new SED.

Given that you can actually buy OLED TVs, unlikely...

There's a chance that it just could be too expensive to bring into the consumer market properly, but I could be wrong.

I think Max'll know the answer...

LG have said 40" OLED should be around sometime in 2012 so it's still some way off (they are the one's who've picked up the baton it seems but are at full capacity just making OLED phone screens at mo), I'd imagine the prices will have improved a little but unlikely to be in the £800 ballpark of the current top 40" prospects.

Anyway Plasma isn't always big n' bulky, it's improved a lot in that respect - my 50" is 2.2" deep with a 1" frame, hardly dominating the living room:

In many cases it's still the top picture quality choice too, though LCD/LED has come a long way in that respect as well. Plasma still has a few good years left in it.

I don't think it's the end of plasma. At the very least mine will be around for a few years.

I would imagine that the majority of people are more than happy with their PQ, and that any change now will be due to other factors such as size, looks, 3D, internet content streaming etc etc. Not once have I looked at my TV and thought the PQ was anything but excellent, same with DVD...having said that I do like the LoveFilm thing on Sony and Samsung so I may have to get a BDP when one of them releases a silver one.
