The cheap cheap option - drill a hole

What I want.
[*]All music including spotify on my home cinema/hi fi in lounge
[*]to control this using an iphone.

solution

as my pc is parrell to my lounge there is a wall in the way.

Could I just drill through and connect a optical audio lead from my sound card to the AV receiver or use HDMI out from my1GB ATI Radeon 5750 GF card to the AV receiver?

could I control spotify/itunes using the iphone therefore? maybe use the apple romote?

You can control iTunes from a different room using the free Remote app for iPhone/iPod Touch. You can try using Remoteless to control Spotify (provided you have a PC, it doesn't work on Mac yet AFAIK), but I found it a bit hit or miss.

To pipe the music I'd get an airport express, which will save you butchering your wall. Add the $25 software Airfoil to stream sources other than iTunes.

I have thought about going down the airport express route. with airfoil. But As im in the process of getting my Pioneer aV receiver and surround sound system I want to do a cheap option to see if I will use it first.

Whats the difference in quality from apple lossless and spotify premium stream? is it noticeable?

With respect to Apple Lossless I have recently installed an Airport Express and using iTunes (Not gone Along Airfoil Route) I think the Lossless Audio is as Good as a CD, the 320kb mp3 was good but a bit below that of the CD (Direct comparison to the CD), I would suspect that the Spotify would be lower again but unless you compared it directly to the same track on a CD you would not notice a huge difference.

In the context of your system I'd be surprised if you could hear a difference. I've been fiddling with Spotify versus lossless versus CD etc on the Uniti and most of the time I can't really tell a difference.

I'm told this is down to the Ogg Vorbis codec that Spotify uses, which is a more effecient/accurate codec than the now aged MP3 codec
