The Availability of the awesome Sony BDP-S770?

For the last couple of weeks I've been trying to track one of these down but to no avail. Strangely enough Comet are now branding them 'Discontinued'. I can't find one In Stock anywhere which is weird considering the S770 has only just been released. Are they discontinued already? surely not.

We're getting into the season of temporary stock shortages right now - wouldn't surprise me if some retailers can't get hold of some products. (And no-one keeps stockpiles of kit anymore....)

Best Buy seem to have some, as do a wide range of independent retailers (good Stone Audio deal here, for example).

I got mine from Comet in November but they seem to have removed it from the website now.

After checking with our category buyer, whilst the Sony BDP-S770 is not a discontinued model I can confirm that we are out of stock of this particular model, with no expected due in dates currently available. Sony themselves are now saying the S770 is discontinued.

I placed an order with them 3 weeks ago after my local Sony Centres told me it was discontinued (Sony themselves told me they had incoming orders). After 3 weeks I spoke to Sony and they are also now telling me it's discontinued. They have refunded my money and told me to wait until the new year for a 'new' model coming to the market.

I wouldn't be surprised if this model's extra short life had something to do with the BDP-S570 being a bit too good.

You are aware that Sony Centres are independent franchises and not actually Sony themselves? So far this year Sony just seem to have not accounted for the demand in their 'top end' gear and just not imported enough in to the UK, now with all the bad weather it's probably making things tick over even slower to meet the demand.

Yes, I'm aware that Sony Centres are franchises. When I mention speaking to Sony above, I mean Sony themselves - the actual manufacturer. I've sent them a complaint after they took my order (and money) for a product which was discontinued. Will see what they say. They are in the process of refunding me. In this case, it appears that the Sony Centres were better informed than Sony themselves.

Yes, I ordered from Sony directly.

I created an account on the 'My Sony' part of their web page and ordered by phoning 0845 6000124 (also advertised on the Sony web page).

They told me on that number that I was ordering directly from the manufacturer.
