Hi guys, just read on internet that its possible to tweak the sound of the 1200 by doing simple things like removing the the thin rubber ring thats between the cartridge and the arm and by unscrewing the feet so they are not in contact with the underneath........anyone know or tried any of this stuff ?

IMHO , cartridge/stylus upgrade can bring better sound. Those tweaks you mentioned ,don't know I wouldn't expect so much .Maybe adjusting the feet and using some heavy plate under the tt ( maybe associated with a sand or rubber layer beneath that plate ?) if you have heavy vibrations in the room?

But the best is to try adjusting the tonearm VTF , leveling the tt and especially use a protractor and try to align the cartridge . It's free and improves the sound if the cart wasn't properly aligned. Be aware to use a protractor made especially for the sl 1200 ( is it mkI ?) . Adjust the VTA also ,this can improve the sound. What is the rest of your system ?

Some people find that a thin cork mat instead of the standard offering makes a difference. VTF & VTA etc., as already mentioned, will make a big difference. Most importantly, get a decent multi-adjustable wall bracket and take the time to locate it properly and adjust it fully.

There is a whole industry devoted to upgrading the 1200/1210, I'd agree with those above that a decent cartridge and setting the TT up properly are the most effective things you can do to get the best sound. Get the cartridge aligned and balanced properly, make sure the deck is dead level and keep it as far away from other components as possible. I use a Denon DL-110 cartridge on my 1210 and it sounds fantastic (buy on-line from the USA, they are about half the price we pay in the UK)
