TalkTalk Fibre Broadband Problem

I've been with TalkTalk for nearly 18 months, and I can't say it's been a happy marriage, but ever since I gave them notice that I was moving my broadband service back to BT, I think they've been messing with my broadband speed.

I should be getting speed of 40 - 50 mbps, but I just did a test 5 minutes ago, and it was 7.5, with a ping of 329. I did another test after, and the speed was over 20, but the ping was 5163. Quite often when I do a speed test, I have trouble connecting to a server, and I'm still waiting after 5 minutes for the TalkTalk website to open, as I'm still getting a 'preparing your dashboard' message.

1. Do you think my problems are down to TalkTalk?

2. Do you think they're doing it deliberately?

3. If 1 and 2 are yes, what can I do about it?

I don't know BB, but I'm sure it's reasonable.

I'm not very technically minded, but a ping measurement of 5163 is incredible, and I think this is the basis of the problem.

7.5 is the slowest I've had recently, as it's usually around 20, but I'm having problems connecting to a lot of sites now, and this has only been happening since I gave TT notice that I was leaving. An example of this, is I just hit the button to reply to your post, and it took 15 seconds to load the page.

Speeds are regularly well below 20 now, pings are always high, and connecting to this site and others, is taking an age. *nea*

Hi BBB

I'm with talktalk too. Try rebooting your router - this will often make a massive difference to the ping and speed overall.

If you are on wifi then also check that you are not on the same band as anybody else. There are simple apps available to check it.

Thanks for the advice. I do find it a little too coincidental that the problems only started when I told them I was leaving them, but I'll certainly give your ideas a go. Thanks again.

I just connected directly with an ethernet cable, and did 4 tests; speeds varied between 37 and 45, but every time the ping was slow.

After that, I rebooted the router, unplugged the ethernet cable, and did 2 more tests. Again the ping was very slow, but this time the download speed was 5.5 for both tests, which is a joke.

With and without the ethernet cable connected directly, I had connection errors on some of the test.

If I could connect to talktalk's website, I'd be giving them some stick, but after clicking on their site, I get a message saying loading my details for about 15 minutes, and it doesn't connect.

Talk talk are the worst ISP I have ever dealt with. I moved over to sky and they have their faults, but the service and support is much improved.

if your are doing a speed test over wifi, then you'll always get at lower reading, only Ethernet/plugged in will give you a true picture. Are you using speedtest.net for checking your speed?
