Surprising tech

So I follow a bloke from the USA on Instagram who's user name is budget_audiophiler. One piece of hifi? equipment he has is an original playstation, he uses it as a SACD player, as in his words, it has the best built in DAC for the period (obviously a laser that can read the discs too). He also says later versions of the original Play Station won't work as SACD because as is usual with Sony they scrimped on the parts with later versions.
I was surprised, obviously as it was designed, I thought as a purely gaming console.
I believe early versions of the PS3 could also play SACD.
Any one else been surprised at what a piece of tech could do that it wasn't primarily intended for?

The original PlayStation used a Sony CXD8561Q audio DAC, its pretty poor by todays standards but if this guy likes it who I am I to argue.
