subwoofer settings help

Currently have the sub set to twelve oclock as per manual but its producing toom much bass for the neibourgs at the moment. I have tried turn the db down on the amp in channel level but that doesnt seem to make as much difference as turn the volume down on the actaul sub. How important is it that the substays at the 12 posistion with regards to the overall balamce and audessy etc?

I ignored that with my AV system. Way too high. Turn it, try it, settle on what sounds best for most (although of course it's adjustable for whatever suits it - I sometimes turn it up late at night when listening at very low volumes).
