Hey all,

I am looking for a new subwoofer to partnet with my Monitor Audio RX6, RX Centre and RX FX speakers.

The RXW12 doesnt extend low and clear enough in my room. Any recommendations on a powerful sub with clean bass?

What is your budget, and how low are you trying to go?......or is it "clean" bass you're after?

Paradigm Seismic 110 is small but very powerful.

Velodyne SPL Ultra range (eg. SPL 1200 ultra).

At a similar price to the RXW12 there are some good options. The Dali Ikon MkII subwoofer goes down to 26Hz (quite a bit lower) and should match the Monitor Audio's well.

Hi brickologist

Depending on budget then Monitor Audio's new GXW15 :) or the PLW15 J) are ones to also consider.

All the best

+1 to the Velodyne. Got rid of my Rel for one, awsome.

I have a similar-ish set up and I'm looking to get either a BK monolith or XXLS-400. Monolith goes a bit lower (IIRC), but is more suited to Movies, XXLS-400 is better for music.

I'm going for a Monolith as we are predominantly Movies based, long chat with BK over this as was going to get the Monolith+ but was advised the Monolith was sufficient, we don't run at Reference levels unfortunately, means we save a £100.00 though

Good transparent advice from BK as well with no upsell!!

That's what I found as well - I was unsure of what size sub to go for, especially with my large room - so got in touch with BK and found them really happy... Just waiting until the extension work is done (starts this coming Monday!) and then have to make the final decision...

Have another chat with Tom at BK, he's very good and will quickly put you on the right route with your final choice.

You really need to try a few subs out side by side. Specs are meaningless at the best of times, and I'm a little dubious as to many manufacturer's claims that their subs reach certain frequencies. Of course, there are many ways this can be measured. The same goes for amplifier power. It's a little more accurate than wpc on a 2 channel hi-fi amplifier, but do double check specs to see how they've arrived at the figure they're quoting.

When you say the RXW12 isn't clear enough in your room, how exactly do you mean? Any examples of what you mean?

Adding a second sub will give you cleaner bass, but not add to your depth. Also take into account that subwoofers produce more distortion the lower they go.

Hey guys, Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions.

To answer a few questions my budget is around 1,500 + pounds. I have been looking into a few of the SVS subs. The PB12 plus and the SB13 plus. both have beautiful frequency response measure at close mic. http://www.svsound.com/images/performancecharts/new_pb12_plus_popup.jpg

I had been considering the Velo SPL1200, but it think i can do better at this price Perhaps the MK MX 350 :) Velo freq response: EDITED BY MODS - House Rules Haystack! I thought that to achieve good bass you need, a good powerful subwoofer, with the best freq response regardless of price.

A good subwoofer can sound awful in the wrong position, so freedom to move it around the room is essential. and also PEQ to flatten any peaks and boost some dips in response. Which my receiver has :) The RX sub doesn't go low enough at high enough volumes to be noticed much at all, even with EQ2 this sub just doesn’t dig deep enough. Anyone had any experiences with SVS subs? or the MX 350? I'll look into the BK too. Thanks again,

The BK Monolith + gets down to an in room of 15Hz (quoted as 20Hz -3dB on their site) with a 500w amplifier etc etc Lots of info on this on another forum, and well worth asking a few questions Good luck

Don't dismiss the Velodyne without hearing it, as on-paper specs don't tell the whole storey. I had the SPL 1200R (previous model to Ultra), and it was the best that I heard at the time within its budget (with both movies and music). You could even put it anywhere, as it had an effective EQ.
