Dear All,

I am looking to get some new speakers for my hi-fi and i need help.

I have a Sonos ZP90 hardwired to my router, the ZP90 this is attached to a DACmagic via optical cable and then to a Yamaha AS500 amp and I am currently using an old pair of Tannoy mercury F1 bookshelf speakers on stands and these need upgrading.

I have about £200 ish to spend on new bookshelf speakers ...(I listen to mostly rock and dance music)

Any advise would be great , a friend has a pair of B&W 685 speaker in very good condition for sale for £250 (could extend the budget) !

I will try and audition any speakers you suggest, so I would just like a few possible options to start my short list.

Thanks

Mark :help:

How about Monitor Audio BX2 they should work well with your amp and are very good

You should head over to the 'does anyone like dance music?' thread and appease the warring factions. 😉

go monitor audio bx2 they are great value very well made and sound good in all areas timing image and bass with all kinds of music, you may find some do better in specific areas such as image but they are a great all rounder, and never forget the classic wharfdale diamond series, but if you can try and audition as with all things hi-fi its your ears that will decide.

If you can get the B&W 685's for a good price I'd go for them; superb speakers and will last a few system upgrades if you went down that route later on

The M/A BX2's are briliant speakers but the B&W's lick them when it comes to all out soundstage and depth of bass; more so with dance music etc...

If they're out of your budget then have a look on eBay for the likes of some B&W 602 S2's or 602 S3's; still superb speakers.

Just remember though that you'll need good stands with any of these speakers to get the best out of them; at a minimum would be Atacama Nexus 6i stands mass loaded with atabites

I have not heard the 685s but if you can get them from your friend within your budget I would imagine they would be the best deal. I only put forward the MA BX2s as a suggestion for buying new.

I actually have MA RX1s which I think are great and they have good bass response amongst other things but they cost £ 425 new.

I did hear the BX2s before purchasing and they were not far behind the RX1s in terms of sound quality.

I feel there are some excellent new speakers in the sub £250 category, not least the superb Monitor Audio BX2s.

Don't be put off the Tannoy Mercury V1 either. They are a massive improvement on the old F1s with a strong, well defined and involving sound. Somewhat under the radar for some reason but very impressive speakers for not much money.

For the price IMO I think the BX2s have the best bass response if thats what you are looking for
