Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on a budget setup, and would appreciate any help. First I'll set the scene...
I'm a student looking for an okay sounding setup at a very low price (tuition fees don't leave much left over these days!). About 18 months ago I purchased the Edifier C3 system (details here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edifier-C3-Speaker-Satellites-amplifier/dp/B001F51IVO) from Amazon for around £70, fabulous sound for the price, but the speakers left a lot to be desired. In my dad's loft I came across some Goodmans Maxim 2s (the later version) however there wasn't an amp in sight. Okay I thought, I'll just hook them up to the Edifier amp.
So I'm currently running the Goodmans Maxim 2s alongside the Edifier C3 sub and amp. The time has come now, however, when I need to upgrade the amp, as the Edifier one isn't really up to much, despite the excellent build quality. I started looking at eBay and greenhomeelectronics and the like to see what was on offer. I checked out a Cambridge Audio A1 for about £35, however without a headphone port it isn't really suitable. I also looked at a Denon PMA-255UK, a Rotel RA-930AX and a few others.
I then stumbled across a Pioneer A-Z370 for £39, which, based on the specifications (details here: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bitak.net%2F366148-prodavam-yaponski-usilvatel-pioneer-az370-za-150-lv.html) seemed pretty good. Although I couldn't find any reviews or evidence of experiences with the amp, I put in an offer for £35 (can still cancel) I was just bargain hunting I guess.
Soon after, I realised I have pretty much no knowledge whatsoever of this amp or if it's any good - this is where you come in! I'm after some recommendations for a cheap amp with a good sound (probably an old 90s one, based on my budget). Also, my Goodmans Maxim 2s, they sound fantastic to me when coupled with the fairly tight-sounding C3 sub, however these are the best I've ever heard really so I don't know any better, they may be terrible! For that reason, I'm also open to speaker suggestions but nothing bank-busting.
If it makes any difference, I tend to lean towards a punchy sound with up front mids and formidable but doesn't detract from the clarity of the rest of the sound.
Many thanks in advance! Any help much appreciated!
