Starting off

I just got my first home and I want to put together a music system, someone is buying me a pro-ject essential 2. To start off I need to be cheap as possible so maybe second hand will be the best way to go, my brother is giving me his Linn Katan's toward the end of the year so I would need speakers until then, I will also need an amp with a phono stage for the record player and I would also like to add a CD player to that at some stage too.

i was hoping someone could recommend a second hand amp around 150.00 and maybe speakers around the same cost to get me up and running.

Hi Roo, and welcome to the forum.

I think I'd suggest getting a new amplifier that will see you right for a few years, and perhaps compromising on the temporary speakers - which you can sell on when the Linns arrive.

Richer Sounds has the well recommended Onkyo A9010 at £20 off, for £179 at the moment. That leaves £121 for speakers, which will give you a huge choice from ebay. Something from Mission, KEF, Wharfedale or Tannoy would be a safe bet for £100 or less, leaving some change for cables/stands. I'd again suggest new if you can get some discontinued Q Acoustics 2020i for £129. For £14 over budget you'd get the latest models, here:-

Hope that is some help, but bear in mind there is lots of choice. The benefit of new is hearing it first, and having some comeback, if needed. Happy hunting!

i have just seen an new open box A9010 on eBay, I will have a bid at that and see if I can get it cheaper, those deals are quite good. I just spoke with my brother and he wants to go to richer sounds and lyric hifi in Belfast, he is after a set of b&w's so maybe I can try and get the linns off him sooner than I first though.
