Standby....

I recently got a rather large electricity bill and whilst I'm still investigating the cause, I thought that I would do some research on energy saving in the household. One topic that came up time and time again, was electrical equipment left on standby.

As a result I bought a Belkin Conserve Surge Protector and have hooked my equipment in our Childrens playroom to it (Pioneer Plasma, AppleTV, XB360, Wii etc..). It seems to work quite well and I have the remote control situated next to the light switch, making it quite simple to turn all of the equipment on and off.

The question that I have is, is it safe for the equipment to be turned off in this manner on a regular basis (i.e cutting the power to the equipment completely without powering down etc..).

I'm looking to get something similar for my office (iMac, External Hard Drives, Time Capsule etc) and Living Room (Pioneer KRP-500a, SC-LX81, BDP-LX71, SKY HD etc), however I want to be sure that it won't damage my equipment due to the way that it operates.

All opinions welcome.
