I have a Cyrus 7/ CD8X system running through old Mission 70 speakers. The speakers need to be close to a back wall. What suggestions for new speakers £500-£1000. I like the look of the Quads a lot - would the 12L/22L be suitable? I've also heard Monitor Audion GR10s which sounded very good. Looks matter as living room so no plasticy looking veneers. All music types listened to but hate fuzziness.

If your looking at the monitor audio range try looking at the outgoing RS series or more preferably the RX series (I'm getting these too). Although they are hard to find Derby has a shop called Musicraft and i'd very very highly recommend going down. The owner Rick is well known on this forum and is a very straight forward person. Like I said i'd highly recommend looking at the Monitor Audio RX series and they did win awards despite being very late to the What Hi-Fi 2009 awards. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi lemonghia

At the moment i am going to suggest that you consider ATC's SCM11 speakers. They are a closed boxed design and more importantly they are also flat and honest. This will help with positioning them close to a wall without the sound (bass in particular) getting itself into a twist.

The SCM11's may not be the greatest looking speakers around however their peformance more than makes up for the simple looks.

Over the years i have had customers that have bought SCM11's (and other ATC's) to use with Cyrus electronics (including 7 & CD8x). The SCM11's are (amongst other qualities) precise, uncoloured, natural and powerful in their presentation. Their neutrality will allow the qualities of your components to shine through by enabling them to breathe.

Thanks

Rick @ Musicraft

I've mentioned in another thread that Monitor Audio, whether it be the new RX, or older RS or GS, isn't suitable to be used up against a wall. Rear ported speakers use he wall to reinforce the bass, which is fine if the speaker is bass light, but generally they already tend to be bass heavy models already. Pushing them against the wall just exaggerates this issue.

The only way a rear ported speaker with a tendancy for a strng bass can work against a wall is if the wall is an extremely flexible stud/partition wall. This soaks up much of the bass, but still might not be enough.

Brands that generally fall into this category are Monitor Audio, Dynaudio, and B&W - all of which prefer breathing space for them to give a more even bass response.

To the OP, a sealed cabinet is the way to go. As there are very few of these on the market, the ATC models are the best place to start looking. If you did go for these, I would recommend adding a power amplifier at a later stage to i-amp to get the most from the SCM7/SCM11, which are the two that fall into your price point - which one you choose will be dependent on room size.

I wouldn't recommend Monitor Audio with an all Cyrus system, full stop. True, Dynos & B&W's need plenty of breathing space, but don't write off all rear ported speakers. I know that Epos work very well with Cyrus and close to the wall.

Why not try Dynaudio's and bung-up the ports?

To an extent, this will work. But once you've used the bungs to stifle the flow of air, the speaker sounds quite different - probably not even anything like the speaker you purchased because you liked the sound of them

The OP mentioned Quads - i have the Quad 22L2s - they're rear ported and need a bit of space, so are probably unlikely to be suitable.

Can't recall if they are rear ported but Leema's Xero at £650 is well rated and delivers good punch. There's also the Quadral Pico if space is limited, very underrated apparently but may also be hard to find.

I've got the Cyrus 8SE with ATC SCM11s - great combo, and I'm not talking bull. Your system will breathe as Rick says (I think he should copyright that saying to stop others nicking it!).

gpi:I enjoy looking at speakers too but it doesn't cost me that much. What?

You're very sad.

Like me.

I think speakers can look very good...

To be fair, only Rick says that anyway. He can claim that exclusively.
