I'm contemplating converting part of my garage into a home cinema/hobby room for myself. The internal measurements of the room would be 9ft x 11ft. Display will be a projector along the 11ft wall.

Currently in my lounge I have a style speaker setup (Q-AV). I didn't want to compromise in the garage with style speakers so have been looking at the Tannoy Mercury F4 Custom 5.1 speaker system. I really like the idea of having floor standers.

However, it occured to me today that maybe these speakers would be too big for the room (is that possible) and I wouldn't be getting any benefits over a smaller setup.

Any views? Budget for the speakers is around the £750 mark.

I think if you were describing your lounge, I'd be inclined to say go for something smaller. But with a dedicated home cinema room, you probably don't need to worry about saving the space. I'd be more worried about the size of the screen. What size would you be going for? Too big and you'll see the individual pixels at that distance.
