Hi

I have an old hi fi system - Kenwood Amp KA 3020, Technics CD player SL-P277A & Wharfedale Diamond 1v speakers - it still sounds fabulous & so I am loathe to part with it. However, I am looking for new smaller bookshelf speakers & want help with the replacement.

Richer Sounds recommended the Mordaunt Short Alumni 2 speakers - but they don't sound as good, so I will take them back - so I am searching for inspiration - I have no technical knowledge at all - just want the replacements to sound just as good as the originals, but only want to spend up to ard £200....help!

Hello and welcome VL. I'm not a huge fan of Mordaunt Short (Clare's überexpensive Performance 6SEs aside), though I acknowledge I haven't heard the Alumni. Personally I'd be looking at Tannoy, Monitor Audio or Wharfedale (I love the Diamond 9.1 and newer 10.1), but you need to choose speakers carefully if they're going on shelves. Is size a constraint as well?

If you want something small you might consider the Acoustic Energy Compact Ones, the Q Acoustics 2010i, or the Dali Zensor 1s but ideally (if you can accomodate the size) I agree with JD's recommendation of the Diamond 9.1s. Great speakers and front ported so they shouldn't boom as much as some others.
