Hello,

I just bought a nice Rotel-05. I am now looking for speakers to listen too mainly Jazz, Latin, Classical and Trip-hop music. I am totally aware that i should go to a dedicated store and listen carefully to various options and decide according to my tastes, but the issue is that i live in Mexico, which means that the only good brands that are distributed are Monitor Audio and B&W => That is the good point.

The bad point is that there is NO dedicated store and the only option is to buy in noisy huge malls, without any "silent" room.

That's why i would be very glad if you could  share your experience and control of listening to help me in my "deaf" choice.

Than you very much in advance

Hello Plastic Penguin and thank you for your answer.

Actually, i don't know the final size of the room i will equiped, because i am looking for a new department to live in. So 40 m2 will be a maximum, i think it would be more reasonable to focus on 25 to 30 m2.

In the other hand, i've been told that the Rotel Ra-05 (2 x 40 w) is not powerful enough to move floorstanders so that it would be better to use good bookshelf speakers.

Thank you again and hope to your from you for your advises

Fully understand what you say. However, two reasons why I mentioned floorstanders: firstly, they have higher sensitivity (genearlising) than bookshelf monitors, which means they are easier to drive. Secondly, the sort of size of room (20m2) bookshelf speakers, and unless your amp has muscle in spades, then only floorsatnders will fill the room sufficiently.

I have a 40 watt Arcam powering Monitor Audio RS6 speakers. Nethertheless, your amp will probably be found wanting if you play music at concert levels - but there's light at the end of the tunnel: The Rotel can upgraded with a power amp = extra dollops of power too.

Alternatively, if you want a system to fill a very large room and you're sold on the idea of bookshelf speakers, then you will probably be looking at something like amp change, minimum wattage 100.

Hope this helps.

i am just back from the store. The choice is limited, but there are still quality stuff i think.

Options are:

MA BR2

MA RS1

B&W 686

B&W 685

one detail: i might get a subwoofer that a friend of mine is giving me :) That could help to charge a bit the sound of bookshelf speakers. He will soon tell the exact model .

What would be your recommandation with this new information and options?

As Gerrard and I have mentioned, floorstanders are your best bet. Bookshelf monitors will struggle to fill a size of room you're looking at.

As regards a sub, you'll find, again, that you will have better bass extention but it won't necessarily give you the desired effect.
