Hi there,

I am looking for a new set of speakers for my new NAD C355BEE amplifier. For the moment a set of Mission 760i is part of the chain.

Any recommendations welcome.

Regards,

Harald

Depending on budget I would be inclined to look at speakers by Q Acoustics (if you want floorstanders), Monitor Audio, and B&W - all great matches with NAD amplification.

The B&W 685s make a great match to NAD amps and would be well worth an audition.

Aim higher is my advice. Budget is budget, and you want an improvement, so think Spendor, Totem, Opera.

Clearly if the OP can afford Spendor, Opera or Totem he should aim for that, but if not the 685s or RX2s would still make a dramatic improvement on the 760s, decent though the Missions were.

To the OP - what music do you listen to, what sort of improvements or changes do you want to make to the sound, and what is your budget?

Thanks for your feedback.

Music I listen too includes classical music as well as rock pop (no heavy metal).

What do you think of Leema speakers?

Although maybe a slight overkill, i'd look at Ruark Sabre III. Fantastic speakers and will match synergy-wise with the Nad brilliantly. However, for a lot less and overlooked (unsure why), these would be stonking.

Don't concern yourself with the average stars, with Arcam A18 they sounded impressive. Connect the Nad and it should inject an extra dollop of zeal.

If I was looking at sub-£400 speakers these would be high on my list....

Try out a pair of Mission 752s off Ebay, the original version. Nothing much this side of £1000 to beat them, killer detail, easy to listen to, good bass, can rock out, do classical, handles pretty much anything with ease. Expect to land a pair off the 'bay for around £100 and in decent nick at that. Mine were £80, won't be kicking them out for a while. Reckon they'd do alright with the NAD stuff.

I presume you mean the Leema speakers Sevenoaks are selling for £399? They look an absolute bargain, but as always try to listen first.

Others to consider would be Dynaudio.

Excellent boxes by all accounts; the Xeros were well reviewed and I hear the Xones are also worth a glance. They're around the £800 mark and that was reduced from further. I'd suggest you don't aim too high for speakers - lashing out a huge sum won't get you the net gains you're looking for I doubt and you might not achieve the best they can offer with the current gear. Your choice (and money...) however.

Yes, we have seen the same offer for Leema. Unfortunately listening to the Leema will be dificult, since there is no dealers close by. However, I listened to Dynaudio and they were fine.

Whats your budget Forester?

IMO the Dynaudio DM 2/7's would be a good starting point but in saying that I demo'd the Monitor Audio RX2's and GS10's alot with the NAD C355BEE amp and C545BEE CDP and they bouth sounded superb

My budget depends on the possible results. If I stay with the current gear (two month ago this was not for discussion but now...) I prefer to go for a good value-for-money option which suits or is a bit above my current gear.

On the other hand, if the new speaker would improve my current NAD system and grow with a better amplifier, I may go that way.

Problem is, I just realised (or started to) whats possible and want a good solution without overkill.

In that case

Standmount speakers:

B&W 685's
Monitor Audio RX2's
Dynaudio DM 2/7's

Floorstanders:

Monitor Audio RX6's
B&W 684's
QUAD 22L2's

IMO the QUAD 22L2's have to be one of the best speakers I've heard in a LONG time (bar the M/A RX6's) and the QUAD's look gorgeous in gloss black; very sleak

NAD pairs up well with "forward sounding" speakers, like mordaunt short or totem. I suggest you for the new aviano 1s which work well with all NAD products.

I've used a NAD with speakers worth 10 times as much for years. Overkill doesn't come into it, the old rule of thumb used to be to spend as much on speakers as you do on the rest of your equipment. Yes, a better amp will improve the sound of a better speaker, but the speaker will sound good to begin with and better than budget models anyway.

Dynaudios are a good choice as, like Totems, they're good enough to withstand several upgrades of amplifiers.

There's a point where the hobby changes and that's where upgrading stops and listening to music begins. The quickest way to get there is to buy good to begin with, and it saves money in the end.
