Hey

I noticed MA cut quite a bit a weight from the old RS6 series, going to the RX6

I would have thought the heavier the speaker the more solid it is, the better it sounds.

Is this unfounded?

Thanks

reviews suggest the rx to be slightly better , so i doubt weight , or lack of it in comparism , would be a problem ..

have you considered a pair of r26s/rs8s and an rs centre canada ??

still excellent speakers , and you could bag all 3 2nd hand for £400ish , that would leave you enough for a powerful yamaha or denon amp which would match perfectly with the ma,s ??

A few years ago that theory about weight may of had some justification. However, with newer materials and techniques it's hard to prove that theory right or wrong...

Some speakers like the ATC's are heavy mainly due to their oversized magnets, others mainly because of the construction of their cabinet (some maybe both). But some speakers use newer, stronger magnets which means they can use smaller ones, which may give the impression that the speaker is a little lightweight.

15/20 years ago, Celestion decided that the best speaker was a low mass one (as did Wharfedale in the late 80's/early 90's with the 500 series), which I think was the SL600si - please correct me if I'm wrong. Obviously it need mass in relation to the floor, so they needed hefty stands, but the speaker itself was very lightweight. So some lightweight speakers may actually be designed that way.

LOL, Plus I dont think there is any RS6's about anymore, plus The old RS series is the new Bronze series from the looks of it.

I was just wondering about the weight as well as got kids and they need to be stable as well.

I always thought bigger the magnet, better the speaker can perform but as you say the RS series is quite old now and times have changed.

See it's weird you should say that maxflinn. I compared RS6s to RX6s on an identical setup and found the RX6s although smoother and easier to match, sounded muddled and muddy compared to the RS6s. Just my opinion......

A lot of speakers are heavy due to them having extremely thick cabinet panels (or at least much thicker front baffles).

Some may have internal bracing, battens, whole 'compartments' for individual drivers (especially tweeters).

Some designs use thin walled construction (9 - 12mm) and some use heavy bitumastic damping panels (like the ones on the inside of car doors). Some veneer the boxes on the inside and the outside to balance the stresses in the material. (My Rega R3s were veneered inside.)

Drivers can have pressed metal spiders/chassis, some have cast metal spiders or (in the case of the new RX series) plastic spiders.

Magnets vary as discussed by others earlier.

Bearing in mind all the variables I don't think weight is any guide to performance.

interesting jtd , ive read that the rs6 av package was better for movies but the rx6s are better for stereo music , i guess its all down to personal taste....

I really need to compair the new BX series with the RX series.

I watch a lot of movies, so the vocal is going to have to be clear and detailed, but thats down to the centre speaker.

I am stuck on the MA as I have the RSW12 and I love the quality and build and sound and everytime I asked MA a question they have gotten back to me, mind you it took about a week, but still they responded, and love good customer service.

I am not getting along with my 9.1's they are not filling the room enough and sometimes as strugling to get detail and clarity from my centre, as my listning area is 5mx5m
