I have a Cyrus 8 amp, Cyrus cd8 cd player and Monitor Audio GR20 speakers.

My problem is i find the system too bright sometimes, depending on style of music. It seems fine with acoustic but too harsh with rock which is my main style.

I have old Audioquest (actually the top of the range Audiotruth) speaker cable and interconnects which were highly regarded in their day but im guessing this is where i should be looking.

Cables will actually do very little in my experience. It's those speakers. I've had them so I am speaking from experience. The metal dome tweeter tends to a brighter sound anyway, and coupled with that kit, it's even more so.

Try some warm sounding speakers like Spendor, or neutral like my ATCs - you really need to demo though!

Any other suggestions for Rick?

Hi there,

I'm no expert but i was having the same issues especially with the accoustic sounding good, but rock rather 'weak'.

I too have a Cyrus (6vs), with MA 914i speakers which I now know are a pairing that could be a tad bright!

This weekend i found some old QED copper speaker cable and decided to bi wire. As this was a free upgrade using what i already had, i now have my original QED silver speaker cable running to the low frequencies, and the QED copper wire running to the high frequencies.

I have to tell you the difference this has made is unbelievable. Not only does the system have a much much better sound stage, but the rock problem is now fixed, and my rock tracks are really coming through with good power.

Not sure if this is a good thing to do or not for the equipment but it sounds great! I was very pleased with the outcome of my experiment!

Hi

I have a Cyrus 7 setup, cd, amp and pre amp.... I found with rock the system lacked a touch of power/bass so I treated myself to a mj acoustic pro sub and improved the speakers to Dynaudio 72 floorstanders, now the system sounds awesome!!!!

Have you tried tilting the speakers into the middle of the room more, this helps with frequency responses I found and if you position them so the sound from the speakers collide where your main seating position is this will help the lower frequencies come to you and drain out the harsh treble a bit!!

Whilst i agree im using bright speakers with bright kit i also use a pair of Grado SR80i headphones and these dont sound bright on my ipod but do on my system, thats why im pointing the finger at interconnects and speaker cable.

I know you should never have to use cabling to balance an un-balanced system but its an awful lot cheaper than changing speakers of the quality of my GR20s or my Cyrus components.

Forgot to add i have a psx-r on my amp which really filled out the range, maybe ill get another for my cd too.

i had the same problem, i found some old mission/cyrus solid core ofc speaker cables on ebay, cyrus recommends solid core for speaker cable and interconnects. i was using qed silver cables so i wasnt exactly helping myself although i was surprised at how much of a difference there was

try moving the speakers around or try putting granite slabs under the bottoms especially if you have a wooden floor? ...

don't think that cables will make a vast improvement

I had the same trouble as you. I had a Cyrus 2 until a couple of months ago and it sounded brutally bright, sometimes. changing my speaker cable to Van Damme Studio Grade Blue made a huge difference. It was cheap (4 quid-ish a meter) and tamed the treble a great deal whilst adding some 'oomph' to Rock and Metal tracks.

Cyrus is inherently bright and the cable upgrade won't solve it completely, but it will help.
