Really depends on your set-up, can we have some more info? What screen do you have, how large is the AV stand and is the stand glass or wood?

If the screen is large enough and the stand isnt very deep, a soundbar can be the better idea as its not as deep and can sit in front of the screen (and some models offer IR passthrough so the remote still works even if the soundbar blocks it). Soundbase is great if you have a deeper stand and youll get good bass without a separate sub, but not as effective if the stand is glass rather than wood (in which case itll sound better having a sub on the floor) and soundbases are a more recent product category so there are fewer out there to chose from. Whats your budget?

After over 10 years of trusty service my Denon S-301 needs replacing. This is for my living room and don't need full surround setup (have seperate cinema room). 50 inch Pioneer and will buy new rack (wood). Choice is soundbar or soundbase, like the yamaha sound projectors but dont have the walls to bounce the sound off. Sound quality needs to be at least on par with the Denon, ideas?

Im interested in follwoing this topic.

I was wondering if someone might be abe to help me, I currenlty have a Logitec Z5500 system connected to my tv, Samsung 51" plasma, and wanting to repalce it with either a soundbar or sound base, I know I probably wont get the 500w power from either but I was looking at either the Canton dm75 or the phillips htl5140, my budget is probably no more than £400.

Any ideas?

Denon DHT-S514 for £300 including the sub. You love the sound of Denon, so stick with what you love, rather than what other people say you should love.
