Anyone know anything about the Sony TA-S2 amp? I've seen one for sale, like the look of it but am struggling to find any info on the net about it. It's not quite as big as a full size amp so I'm wondering if it's a proper seperate.

I think the amp is part of the scala series, a 'lifestyle separates' series from the mid 90's. It's based on one of the older ES-series amps. I think you'll find the transformer even has 'ES' on it. There are a number of other components in the series, including some well regarded active speakers. The amp got good reviews when it came out, but apparently did not sell to well. Probably, as one review said, because the components were quite expensive, but together did a fairly good impression of a midi-system. I haven't heard it, but I imagine it's a good amp.

I'd go along with that; the higher end Sony gear's worth chasing. Esprite/ES and similar ranges are well worth checking out. One of the other guys on here's got a high end Sony CDP and was thinking of swapping it for a Cyrus CD6SE....er, whoa there sonny!!!

Is it likely to be better than my Arcam Alpha 5 ? How do you define better I hear you say.....I don't know either.

Hard to say, but easily the equal I'd have thought (and quite possibly an improvement). Can't tell without hearing though, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out the Sony won out.
