Interested in the Sony STR-DA2400ES, but thought Sony were putting prices up as of 1st Feb.

Is this still the case?

If so, when can we expect to see the increase in the shops, and by how much is the increase?

Any help would be appreciated..............

AFAIK Sony has said that due to the strength of the yen against other currencies, it will have to put prices up, some by as much as a third, but I don't think it has as yet given any specific timings or details of how this will affect particular models.

Not sure when the prices will go up, but as with other bits of kit not manufactured in the UK, expect a 15-25% rise to compensate for the spectacular fall of Stg (thanks Gordon).

If your retailer is honest, the price rise will filter through as pre-price rise stock runs out. If he's dishonest, expect an immediate increase... We bought a piano at the weekend, and the next model up in the range was actually cheaper than the one we'd intended on buying because they still 2008 stock left!

Thanks big aura - by the way, how's the denon 1909? It's the other amp I'm interested in, as a replacement to the Onkyo 606 I presently have.

I'm looking for something that will improve 2 channel playback, with maybe not so much thump for movies (poor neighbours!!), as it makes the wife jump!!!

Pistol Pete1:Will they publish such timings through their website/media, or just do it when it's necessary without warning?

Usually such rises just filter through in the form of revised trade price lists supplied to retailers, but I guess some manufacturers may choose to put a statement on their websites when they are forced to raise prices, given the current economic climate and the effect such price rises may have on sales.

it's not bad on movies, but I've actually been a little underwhelmed by it's 2-channel playback. It took an age to get the settings right, and presumably for the new speakers and amp to both run in a bit. It's sounding much better now, and I'm happy with it ... but not over-the-moon. I think I should have gone for a 2309 or maybe a Yamaha (but they're like hen's teeth at the minute!).

RRP on this amp went up on the 1st January from £499 to £549. Increased street prices will hit any stock ordered from Sony after this date.

We sell the things as we are a Sony dealer. So the source is our trade price lists.

Got that upgrade itch back, PistolPete? Thought we'd already had words on the futility of such a small-scale trade-up?!

In your specifc case, I really would sit tight at the moment- 2009 ranges start filtering through from Easter time, and even with price rises there's bound to be a generational increase in features and performance that would be worth waiting a few months for....

Wow Clare - I'm impressed - your remember me!!!!

Upgrade inch is an awful thing, you know!!

I came to the conclusion that I would not be able to justify going up in price to the next level of av amp (£600+), so therefore thought a slight upgrade would be sufficent. Saying that, the Denon 2309 is very tempting at round £500. Therefore I have put a budget on £500 for this upgarde.

Since we last communicated, I have upgraded to the Q Acoustics 1030i front speakers, and bi amped them too.

Anyway, I I have seen two Onkyo 606's on ebay selling at £280-£300 and both about 6 months old (like mine), I thought now might be the time, before the Onkyo 607 appears and de-values mine as second hand equipment.

Any thoughts?

Blimey, you really must want shot of the Onkyo.... I agree you'll get more for it if you sell as a current range, but I'd encourage you to go as high as you can to give you headroom: again, maybe second hand will buy you something better?

This is bad news for me as I have been waiting for the price of the 2400ES to come down like all the other receivers in this price range.

I have purchased front and rear speakers, I am only using my MS 902i's fronts at the moment with my very old Sansui stereo amp, but I may have to look at the Yamaha DSP-AX763 instead now with the price increases.

I got my 2400ES from warehouse deals uk (via amazon) for £335 delivered, the condition was described as 'like new' hence the low price, but it looked completely brand new to me.

Maybe I got lucky but I would check amazon for any 'like new' models.
