sony str-da2400es no sound with hdmi inputs

I have just got a sony 2400 av amp it's connected to a sony bdp 760 & sony 970 dvd recorder they are both connected by hdmi, but they both seem to have a problem no sound. I have select the sound to auto on the amp I get a picture but no sound. I have also connected my 970 dvd player with a coaxial cable I get sound when I select coaxial on my amp. But no matter what I have tried I don't get sound over hdmi I've selected auto for audio on the amp as I believe with auto hdmi gets priority regarding sound.
As anyone with this amp got any idea what I might be doing wrong or have I got a dud amp. Hope someone can help

Is this a common problem with av amps & tv's with a dvi connection. After looking around on the internet I found my problem is that my amp is connected to my samsung lcd tv by a hdmi cable with a hdmi to dvi adaptor going into the tv.
I played a dvd got a picture but no sound from the amp, but when I pulled the hdmi cable out of the tv I get sound from the amp & the amp displayed dolby digital. But by doing this I will of course not have a picture on the screen & when I plugged the lead back in the picture returned but the sound went again & the dobly digital disappeared from the amps display.
As anyone else had this happen.
