Sony-RDR-HXD970 Dual Digital?

The Sony has one analogue and one digital tuner, but can only record using one of the tuners at a time. An alternative might be the Panasonic DMREX78 but this only has one digital tuner too.

If you are looking for two digital tuners you need to be looking at PVR's, which normally have two digital tuners in exchange for the DVD recording/archive/playback facility you get with the Sony/Panasonic.

All the Sony DVD/Hard Drive machines are the same as the 970 in this respect. They are fantastic machines though. The current version is the RDR-HXD995. Very easy to use, superb DVD upscaling via HDMI and very reliable. Only drawback is the single tuner.

If you start looking at PVRs there are only really two brands worth having - Humax and Topfield. All the re-branded budget PVRs out there are generally built in the same factory and suffer all sorts of reliability problems. In particular avoid Thomson. In terms of value/performance ratio the Humax machines are impossible to beat. They are excellent products.
