Hi guys,am thinking of watching a movie later using the Qriocity service on my kdl37ex503,does anyone know if the movie will output 5.1 channel sound?I`m presuming you have to hook up the tv to your home cinema amp using an optical cable.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi bot bot,

To be perfectly honest, although I know you will get 5.1 sound when watching a Qriocity movie on one of the BD players, I haven't personally checked that with a TV. There's no reason why you wouldn't get it, though. As you say, you could connect your TV to your amp using an optical cable, or if your amp's new enough you might be able to use Audio Return Channel with an HDMI cable.

Interesting to hear that you guys have had problems with Qriocity. I've personally used it 2-3 times when it's been absolutely perfect, but on one occasion it has let me down with stutter. I'd but that down to the fact that my connection had dropped below the recommended 4.5mbps minimum, though, so while annoyed, didn't feel like there was much to be done about it.

My understanding is that the problem is that the bit-rate isn't adapting to bandwidth fluctuations as efficiently as it should. I'll try to get some info on this from Sony, but if that is the issue it could at least be fixed at Sony's end.

I would be interested in the response too, I tried to watch SATC 2 with my Mrs in HD and despite my constant 9Mbps connection, it was unwatchable, so we rented the SD version instead. But I have not used it since, I thought it was a problem at my end.

Personally I didn't get on with the Lovefilm service. Used it for about a year but always had discs that I wasn't in the mood for or wanted a new release that they'd run out of stock of. For me, on-demand works better. When it works, of course! Oh, and only as an addition to the Blu-rays I buy of must-watch-in-optimum-quality titles.

As I only get 1.5meg, Itunes a computer and an Apple TV work best for me!

SATC2 is pretty unwatchable in any format

Tell me about it, dreadful, it was only because of the free credits Sony where giving out for registering, I would have never used my own money.

I used to have this problem with lovefilm, but since I cancelled and then re- subscribed about 6 months later I seem to be getting all the titles I want. I still buy the must haves.

I actually quite like the 'lottery' nature of what you're going to get with LoveFilm.

I first subscribed years ago and got fed up with them constantly emailing me to put at least 10 titles in my list. So I'd fill it with stuff I didn't really want to shut them up and guess what? that's what they sent, not the titles I really want. I canceled my account.

Now it seems OK though. I put 'The Social Network' in my queue, not expecting it for months being a popular release, and it came straight away.

Reply from Sony:

"The video quality of your movie is dependent on your internet connection speed. Sony recommends at least 1.5Mbps for SD and a minimum of 4.5Mbps for HD for the optimum experience. Qriocity is delivered via “streaming”, therefore if your internet connection speed changes during playback the smooth viewing experience may be affected. Although Sony tests your connection speed prior to playback, and deliver the highest quality video based on these results, your connection speed can vary during playback due to many factors."

So it seems as far as the company is concerned, as long as your connection never dips below 4.5mbps HD playback should be fine. As I said earlier, for me it always has been fine when my connection's been solid, but I'd be very interested in feedback (good and bad!) from anyone else who's used it.

Cheers,

Tom

I used the service to stream a movie in HD the other night, I get a constant 22 Mbps from virgin, which very rarely drops to around 10Mbps at worst. (even with 30% drop in speed there should be no issue according to Sony). In the first 5 minutes on 2 occasions there was a complete drop out of picture to the screen, where a fuzzy coloured screen popped up and then turned pink, then came back on, something I would usually liken to a HDMI hand shake problem. As my router sits behind my blu ray player, I paused the film and plugged in an Ethernet cable instead, I then changed the settings to wired and hey presto it did not happen again.
