Any news on the 3.00 firmware update for all us people with the fat ps3. Will we be able to bitstream too? fingers crossed!

Hmmm......that's an interesting review. So, the ability to bitstream audio has given this PS3 that extra star, as compared to the older version. Is that right? I'm sure you won't be too concerned about the smaller size when giving it 5 stars.

Not enough reason to trade my current 60GB model in... hard drive space has never been an issue and if it was I think I'd go the uograde route.
For those that have nay got one though this indeed is the best one yet... although I agree the old one looks more attractive.

Thanks Claire. The new PS3 slim is definitely an excellent first blu-ray player purchase, but I'm not convinced if it's worth the upgrade over the older PS3. The one main problem I've noted with my PS3 is, it tends to get hot after a couple of hours of use (thanks to my closed cabinet) and the fan noise becomes irritating. Is the PS3 slim better at that?
It's certainly quieter than the old model re fan noise.
As an original PS3 owner, I too don't see the need for an upgrade. However, the improved-value model may appeal to those yet to make a move into the Blu-ray arena, whom also see a use for the PS3's many other tricks

Anyway guys.... you can understand why the new ps3 dosen't offer better performance over picture and sound in blu-ray terms as it would definitely defer buyers to Sony's dedicated blu-ray players. You don't buy the ps3 for a blu-ray player alone but for its all round ability.

I don't think anyone would suggest "upgrading" to it over the older one - aside from a few minor differences, it's essentially the same.

It's pretty well documented that the older 'phat' PS3 cannot bitstream HD audio due to hardware limitations with it's HDMI chipset. This cannot be rectified with a firmware update.

What is the significance of being able to bitstream? From the review, it seems to indicate that it makes no difference whatsoever in terms of sound quality, i.e. the sound quality in the old PS3 is just as good as the new PS3?

My point was, there's nothing official from Sony to say it definitely cannot bitstream - until something official comes out, it's just rumours and therefore cannot be confirmed as definite. I for one completely believe that it can't, but this is just a belief as I don't know for sure.

As for the suggestion that Sony would have made the change if they could, it doesn't ring true for me...Sony could have made all PS3 models backwards compatible with PS2 like the original 60Gb version, but they didn't. Whilst The Prof and Clare both see no reason to 'upgrade' for the sake of bitstreaming, some people might. There is always the risk to Sony that providing bitstreaming on the older models now would prevent some people from shelling out for the new one, so the chance of them doing it seems ever reduced.

Um...forgive me, but its rather simple to find out isnt it? For example, WHF found out by...taking it out th ebox and doing it. EDIT - with the new one.
It may be more difficult to discover why it cannot (as that seems to be th eunderstanding for a while now) - hardware or software...EDIT - with the last one.

Im one of the few (actually probably the only one, lol) who has decided to sell my old 60gb ps3 for a ps3 slim. The mains reasons were - 1. It is able to bitstream the sound over hdmi
2. The fan is quieter which will be a bonus for me as i watch more movies on it than i play games.
3. It uses less power so should save a couple of pennies on the bills.
Also, i managed to get some decent cash for my old one and a good deal on a new ps3 slim where i can sell the stuff that come with it and even come out with some change so it will be worth it in the end!

ooooh fat ps3's suffer from fan noise all of a sudden?? lol i thought that was exclusive to the xbox 360 lol

They have never been great looking though have they? I mean the fat ones are modelled on the George Foreman Grills lol. The new ones well, lets just say Sony had to do somethin to cut costs, so woohoo take off the lacquer lol.

why is everyone obsessed with bitstreaming,just so they can see the logos displayed on there amps!!!!.i cannot tell the diffrance at all,when blu-ray first came out all soundtracks were 5.1 pcm,casino royale is a cracking example of pcm sound vs dolby true hd.the pcm sound was a lot more in your face.decoding onboard the ps3 is the same as sending via bitstream.it just lights the logos up on the amps,whilst the amp decodes the sound,and not the ps3.just my two pence worth.and now doubt this will be commented on.
