As clare said, the shops should be offering a better service, taking more care of their stock Online retailers just take your money and run, not caring about service and, where they source or handle their stock. You will get some sets that have some sort of a problem, but i am yet to see one affected, and i've seen alot, which is why i'm annoyed max is putting off people before they go into a shop! He may weel say i'm just making them aware, but then he hasn't even seen the problem for himself!I'm sure there are reputable online retailers somewhere, but if there selling products under the Sony UK trade price, there being sorced elsewhere and therefore will not be Sony Uk Specification!

Would you like a broom for all those sweeping generalisations?

But seriously, please provide evidence (and full disclosure of how you know such info) before making such allegations.

(And please don't put words in my mouth, either).

As far as i'm aware, what hifi reviews sets intended for sale in the uk, if someone buys a set from Sony Germany, the likelyhood is it's intended for that market. The reviewed model then cannot be compared to that one bought in Germany, which is why if you buy a 40W5500 for £800, you are not buying a UK spec model and therefore it will be from another country and the spec will different.

In my 5 years experience of online purchasing so far (99% of my stuff has been bought online), all I know is that there are 2 types of online traders: one who send you genuine UK stuff, and one who don't send anything!!! I'm not aware of Germany or Mongolia spec TVs sold in the UK. If they are, genuine retailers will specify from where they have sourced the TV.

Online retailers are able to offer discounts, simply because they don't have an expensive showroom to maintain. All they need, is a warehouse to stock the stuff.

All my purchases so far, including my new car, laptop etc, have been purchased online, and they're all UK stock! The quality is exactly the same. I bought my laptop from amazon, and there was a problem with the screen. Amazon replaced the laptop at their expense, no questions asked. Try returning the laptop to your local shop.

The only reason I purchase online, is for the discounts. I've recently known of some shops who price match online rates, so now I don't mind buying from shops. But I don't think there's any difference in the product quality itself, whether you buy online or from the shops. It really depends on your preference.

But that doesn't address your accusation that products being sold at a discount are being sourced overseas...

Putting to one side the Sony specific point, if you extend the logic here then the premise being made is, apparently, that all products sold by online retailers, if not sold at the manufacturers / distributers minimum price are sourced elsewhere than the home country (and of inferior quality)?? I don't think so. 'Market forces' / Trading Standards / Goods of merchantable quality anyone?? Not my call, obviously, but suggest the thread is closed.....

if backlight bleed is a fault , tvs that have it should be replaced , if backlight bleed is not a fault , but is something that affects some sets of the same model , but not others , then that is a quality control issue ... some people have reported backlight bleed on certain sony tvs lately , namely w4500s and w5500s ( look at whfis and others reviews ) , now , here we go , either its (A) the sets are faulty ? or (B) they are not faulty , but some sets are better than others ? ..........what do you think optimus ? oh , and by the way , notice theres no option (C) its the online retailers fault .....
