Sony KDL-40W4000 - is it definitely the right choice?

I have just ordered this TV in advance of getting a blu ray player. I have since read comments talking about light seeping in at the corners and the fact that it's only a 50Hz set. I'm not entirely sure what this means, so what effect might it have on my viewing experience? I will be watching DVDs, Blu rays and my V+ box. I was particularly attracted by the fact that it is a 40 inch set but won't take up much more room than a 37 inch set, and the fact that it was only £600.

Have I made a good decision, or should I have gone for something else? I have a day or so to cancel if need be, so any comments gratefully received.

Thanks

You can get the Sony KDL40-W4000 for £799 - if you can stretch to that you will be much happier I would imagine.

Small amounts of clouding(seeping) on LCD sets is not that unusuall My 2K sony does but in fairness youve got to try and see it and you'll never notice it with normal veiwing imo

Thanks guys. You're probably right garethwd, I will have to try it. I can send it back within 14 days. Gerrardasnails, £600 is pretty much my maximum I think. Don't think I could stretch to £800 unfortunately. I'm probably wrong, but I can't help but feel that you're always paying a premium for the Sony brand name.

Eh...no. I was basing it on the opinions of What Hifi. Their reviews of it were all very good, and I based my purchases of my Onkyo amp and Jamo speakers on their reviews, and they weren't wrong!!

And the fact that it's a smaller tv (in terms of overall size) and full HD and 24fps. Obviously I know the tv is year old or so, but that has brought it into my price range. Have you seen it Gander? I've read as much as I can about it, and in general, the opinions are good, except for some light bleeding at the corners reported by some. I have also read as much as I can about 50/100hz processing, and frankly, I'm none the wiser. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have.

Having a 50Hz set that's 40" won't matter THAT much. Light seeping in corners means that the corners will be a tiny bit brighter than the centre of the screen, which can look bad in dark scenes of DVD/Blu-ray movies.

Anyway, have you considered the Panasonic TH-42PX80ÿhttp://whathifi.com/Review/Panasonic-TH-42PX80/ plasma T.V? It might be listed as £700 on WHF, but you can find it on comet for £630. Also, since it is a plasma, there won't be any light seeping and the colour and contrast will be very good.

Lastly, remember to always try out a new T.V. before you buy it to make sure you like it.ÿ

Thanks for the advice. I know I should have tried the TV first, but I'm a bit impulsive at times. Anyway, I have cancelled my order for the Toshiba and am instead getting the Samsung LE40A656. It will put my mind at rest re the 100hz processing, and is stunning to look at and not too much more expensive. Expensive enough that I won't be going out much this month though!!

Sorry to labour the point, but I am now thinking that if I can stretch to £800, I should get as good a tv as I can. So going back to Gerrardasnails' suggestion, I'm looking again at the Sony KDL40W4000. Obviously I've read the reviews, but I notice that it doesn't have 100Hz processing either. Is this a disadvantage, or am I making too much of this? Is it still better than the Samsung?

Or the 100hz kdl 4500 for 80-90 quid more. Now that looks good value to me !

i wouldnt worry about 100hz From what ive read it improves some material and makes other stuff worse! ive not had motion problems on my 50hz set!

I've struggled to stretch to £800 for the the w4000. I definitely can't go any further. From what I've read though, there seems to be other technology in the w4000 to make up for the lack of 100Hz. Do you definitely think that the extra £200 for the Sony over the Toshiba is money well spent?

Wouldnt know as ive not seen either telly in action! but im happy with my sony! and my old mans got a toshiba LCD and that pretty darn good too! but in fairness i dont think you can far wrong with a sony lcd. Just a note after buying my onkyo 875 amp ive used it's scaler becouse i found it better than the sony inbuilt one.

Yep, I know, but I can't upscale a standard def picture to 1080p on it, so I think I should use the Sony TV (if I go for it) to do any upscaling.

Well, after much deliberation, I've finally plumped for the Sony 40W4500. I know I won't be disappointed. Think I got a good price too - £870 delivered. Now nothing to do but wait....

well im totally confused! he changed the title to kdl 40w4000 is it the right choice but says hes plumped for a kdl40w4500!!

and surely at 870pounds its not the 40w4500, cheapest iv seen that baby is 940pounds!

honest if anyone knows about light bleeding on the sony 4500 can they let me know as im so close to purchasing one!!

Sorry thehoss. I was going to get the 40W4000, but I watch a lot of sport, so I wanted the 100hz version. And I figured that if I was willing to spend £800 for the 4000, another £70 for the 4500 is worth it to be completely satisfied.

Can I say on here where I got it from at that price?

Yes please - that's an incredible deal!

Actually, small mistake. It was actually £879.99. I got it from Edgeware Hifi Centre (www.edgewarehifi.co.uk) with free postage. I think there's someone else selling it cheaper, but charging about £50 postage. Can't remember who it is, but they come up when you do a Google search.

Hi im getting the same tv tomorrow and the picture is superb as i had a demo in john lewis last wk.

The sony center is offering it for £849.99 till monday with a free sony blu ray player (BDP-S350) Normal price £200.00 alone and 12 months warranty on player and 5 YEARS WARRANTY on the tv as a package.

I looked at several lcds and they are all grainy and wobbly very close up whatever there price but ive got to say movies like cars on blu ray demo through ps3 was amazing.

Good luck enjoy im sure you wont be dissapoined this in my view is a great LCD

I hope you're talking about the 40W4000? I'm actually getting the 40W4500 now (should arrive on Tuesday) - I haven't seen it at that price!!!
