My dad's finally looking for a new telly as the 1982 ish vintage B&O needs a whack to get a picture! Having read a few posts on here, not specifically on this sony model, SD pictures are often found wanting. Is my dad going to be disappointed by the performance in SD mode on a screen that is primarily designed for HD? I can't really advise him as I'm waiting for my philips CRT to die before i get an LCD and use a panny projector for anything i really want to watch. The other concern i have is sound quality, the B&O has always excelled here and still does, will this be replaced by a weedy sound? Finally, if anyone knows of anywhere in the York area where we could get a decent audition i'd be grateful for the info as currys/ comet etc. are way short of ideal!

Cheers, Rich.

the
new toshiba regza range are said to be very good with sd , if your dad
is not likely to be watching much hd then a 720p hd ready tv will
handle the upscaling of the sd input better than a full hd set ,
plasmas are more akin to the picture of crts than lcds , maybe a hd
ready 37inch panasonic plasma would fit the bill ? the sound of any
flat screen tv wont be as bassy as he was used to , though they are
fine for general tv , news , soaps , etc , samsungs tvs have quite weak
sound , if i was looking for my dad id check out those two...

I have a Sony KDL-40W4500 and the SD quality isn't great IMO. I've got Sky HD and blu-ray, so it's not a big issue. The sound from the TV is a bit weedy on it so I bought a Yamaha soundbar to beef it up and it's much improved.

Thanks guys, confirms i need to try and get a decent audition of a few! I had a bit of a look in comet which is far from ideal and i can't say i was blown away by any of the SD pictures although it's hard to guage viewing distances. The Freesat HD was stunning however!

I had the same doubts, as I'm not ready to upgrade to HD just yet, but I have to say that SD is excellent through my Sky+. If you keep the settings straight out of the box, then the picture will look terrible. Take your time and you will eventually find the settings right for you.

I bought mine through amazon.co.uk for £695 and it took me about a week before I was finally happy, but if I didn't like it, I could send it back within 30 days of purchase.

My basic settings are -

Backlight - Between 4 and 7, depending on the light situation in your room.

Contrast -78

Brightness - 50

Colour - 60

Live Colour - Low

Colour Temperature - Neutral

Also, there are different modes for Cinema, Sport etc and I just use my personal settings for cinema mode and use it for all my tv viewing. I just change the sound to Standard, when watching TV programmes and then back to cinema for films. I also adjust the 100Hz for normal tv viewing to Standard. The sound has a lot more bass in Cinema mode and is much better than in the other modes. Sound for DVD's is preferably better with a home cinema system, but it's perfectly acceptable on its own.

No, I got the hty-760, which is now discontinued, I think. It was replaced with the ysp-600, which is pretty much identical.

It's good - I've got it a bit of a weird-shaped room (kitchen/diner) so it's hard to appreciate the surround bouncing off the walls. It's also not that loud (I think it's about 80W), but it's fine for what I need it for. The sound quality is overall pretty good and you can tweak the settings a lot to get the sound just how you like it. If you were going to get one, you might want to consider getting a separate sub woofer as the bass is okay but not great.

I don't think you can go wrong with that one. Not seen a bad review.
