Sony KDL-32W4000 Problem

Following a review of Sony's KDL-32W4000 in 'What Hi Fi'  I did in fact purchase one only to find when viewing certain programs on standard definition such as 'The Diary of Ann Frank' (BBC1) on the darker scenes there is a snow like appearance or 'picture noise'.  I had a Sony engineer to check it out and he assured me there was no fault with the TV however when I connected my previous TV (a Sharp Aquas) and another TV (also a Sharp) to the same set up and they do not show the noise/snow with the same program (which i recorded).  I then had our sky installation checked just to be sure and this is also perfectly fine.  When the Sony engineer came out he connected another Sony TV to the set up and the noise/snow was present.  I usually use a sharpness level at 12-13 and have found the only way to eliminate the problem is to turn this down to almost 0.

Has anyone else had this probem? or any advise.

Thank You

As we regularly say in our set-up advice - and here on the Forums - picture modes such as sharpness often cause more problems than they solve, and are best all switched off to start and then tweaked upwards/on as needed.

In this case, Sony's sharpening software was causing an issue, so you've solved it by switching it off - job done!

Well im just about to purchase one of these on friday so glad i found that out, overall how is the sony i was stuck between the Sony and the panasonic TX-32LZD85 having read various reviews and whathifi calling it the best 32 inch out there i decided to go for sony. I will be using it for Sky HD and Blueray.

Get one quick if you want this model, as stocks are running very low as it has been discontinued.

But surely the sharpness shouldn't have to be turned down/off to geta decent picture? ÿThe other TV's i have had haven't been like this.ÿ

ÿDirected towards 'dazb'ÿcouldyou let me know if you have the same problem just to make sure it isn't aproblem with the range of TV's or just my set.

Thanksÿ

Why not? , you tune your set to your eyes and environment , reflection, glare lighting etc. Manufacturers have to build a set that operates within various tolerances to cater for extremes , just cos you have sharpness set to 0 or is not indicative of a problem. Get a picture you like (THX SETUP ) then sit back and enjoy don't worry about settings.

Not come across this issue with my 32W4000 so I think it must be down to your settings needing a little tweak. If you've not run the THX setup I would recommend doing so. All sets are different but if it helps I can post my settings later.
