I'm in the market to buy a new 40" or 42" TV, plasma or LCD. Not bothered about cost, looks or how green it is. I just want the best, for sound and picture quality!
As a long-time subscriber to What Hifi, I've been following your tests (2008 Awards etc) over recent months, particularly in the current issue where the Philips 42PES001 just pips the Sony KDL-40W5500, mainly because of the screen backlighting problem.So....
1. Will Sony correct the backlighting problem on this model, like now, or when?
2. Is there not a KDL - 40Z5500 due out very shortly (when?) so is it worth waiting for your test on this model?

3. Whilst the Sony Bravia range seem generally to be flavour of the month at present, are there other 40'' to 42" sets likely to be announced by any of the main manufacturers within the foreseeable future, particularly Panasonic of whom I've always been a fan, that might perhaps might prove to be the best. Or do I have to accept that, sooner or later, whatever I do buy will be bettered anyway?

Cost no objective and limited to 42" I'd personally buy Philip's 'Essence' LCD as reviewed by this mag (In my defense I did praise the thing before WHS&V's review) Lovely and nice looking.

With regards to panasonic plasmas, I've been looking at a Samsung high-end model a few days ago with one of panasonics new tv's in the shop too (G15? Can't remember the model # sorry). The Panasonic was around £1400 and claimed a contrast ratio of 200'000 (or 2'000'000????) to one but it subjectively lacked contrast and shadow detail compared to the Samsung LCD. It also had too much of red/orange tint, no matter what setting the assistant tried and lacked picture clarity. My opinion only. The Samsung was superb (7020W) and I did, for a short time, compare it with a Kuro. It did'nt last that long but I found it very nice though it was 46".

The Panasonic P42V10 will be out in May. That will be the top of the range for PQ. It will have a THX certified picture mode, Deep Colour and Digital Cinema Colour.

The 42G10 is currently out and has blacks on par with Pioneer 8G (according to a couple of other review sites).
