Any idea about when the new flagship SONY BDP-S780 bluray player is going to be available and at what price.......?

If the release of the S760 and S770 are anything to go by then expect a release in August/September of this year. Both of the previous models were released much later than the budget players and i have no idea why that is the case, i had to wait until september to get my S760 at launch and the S770 continued the trend. I may be wrong of course but the fact that there is very little info on the S780's release at present and indeed about the specs of the player points towards a release at the back end of the year.

I may well replace my S760 with this player so i'm waiting for some more news myself, the player is listed on the Sony website here: http://www.sony.co.uk/product/blu-ray-disc-player/bdp-s780 but there is just an outline of features and nothing extensive. As for price it will be around the £300 mark just like previous years so probably £299 at launch, hope that's of some help to you.

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.
The only reason I might go with the S780 instead the S580 is the super bit mapping. I dont care about its other facilities like skype etc....

Do you think it is worth waiting that long for the super bit mapping?

I honestly beleive it will be worth waiting for. The previous models in the 7 series of bluray players contained much better quality components inside when compared to the 3 or 5 series and features that aren't on the cheaper models which resulted in improved picture and sound quality. It's a tough question as to if the super bit mapping alone is worth waiting for...i have it on my S760 but i haven't experimented with it on and off to see what difference it makes.

I will have a little look at it later today if you like to see what the difference is but i do have it on at present on my S760, i'm sure of that so will post later on with the results. Overall i beleive that the S780 will be a superior player to the 3 or 5 series but by how much is difficult to answer as last year the gap between them in terms of performance was not great, the S770 was only a slight improvement. The previous year was a very different story with my S760 packing some serious tech over the cheaper models and high quality coponents that came from the top of the range deck (the S5000 i think, not entirely sure though).

Hopefully, it would not dissappear before it even had a chance to arrive, like the S770, which must certainly have the dubious honour of having the shortest 'shelf life' of any component!!!

It was released a week ago. I got mine yesterday. It looks like the retail price is £250, but I saved a decent amount by pre-ordering.

is it any good?

The cheapest i could find the Sony BDP-S780 is £218 here. The company is in Poole Dorset ( I'VE NOT USED THEM ), it costs a further £8.12 for shipping in the UK.

That was after a quick Google, so possibly some cheaper deals out there.

Come on Clare,

please do so asap. we want to see whether it remains top in its class

Got mine ordered from the company identified above by F1only. Great customer service so far and taking delievery today 🙂

I thought the title went to Denon DBP-2011UD! 😉

It had a shelf life of "zero"!

Bigboss between SONY BDP-S780 and Panasonic BDT-310 which one would you choose?

It depends on what the rest of your system is. If you have a 3D TV & a non-3D receiver, then the Panasonic BDT-310 with twin HDMI outputs makes more sense. I haven't experienced the Sony S780 so can't comment on it. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Both will be equally brilliant.

Hi Clare,

Any update on what issue the review will be in? Do you know if a review is due on the BDP-S580 as well?

Thanks,
