Recieved my Sony BDP S760 yesterday, subtle but noticeable PQ and Sound quality improvements over my ps3.Most impressed with the surround sound from the headphone jack,at last i can have the sound as loud as i want without the wife sceaming at me to turn it down.

Just goes to show just how good the PS3 really is and not just as a gaming machine but also as a good blu ray player and DVD Upscaler if improvements on the BDP-S760 are merely subtle

ive noticed some jerkiness on some slow panning shots on my machine. Im going to be getting my BD 35 out of its box and doing a direct comparison to see if the sony is playing up!

Though of course that will depend on the size and resolution of the OP's TV; distance sat from screen; rest of set-up (amp, speakers etc...). One man's subtle could be another's major upgrade!

Is that with Blu-ray or DVD? If the latter, is the Onkyo or the Sony doing the upscaling? Also, with Blu-ray, check the settings on the Sony, too (and your TV) - there's a lot of options in them-there menus!

Its with the former, although i have not tried DVD as yet Clare. I think i have it all set up properly. 1080p 24fps and all that. Maybe i need to switch something on the onkyo? Given you own the big onk, would you suggest the onkyo does the upscaling for DVD's?

Thanks

(sorry to hijack the thread slightly OP!)

I'd definitely try the Onk upscaling DVDs - the processing is excellent. Haven't compared it directly with the Sony (which is also great at upscaling) - you can go there first

Thanks Clare. That does leave me with a couple of questions for you though. What do i set the onkyo to to pass through an upscaled picture from the sony? and also, i'm assuming, in order to get the onkyo to do the upscaling i set the sony to the native resolution of the dvd? (which would be?) I know i am being lazy but its been ages since i messed about with settings and all that jazz.

I shall let you know what i think with a straight a-b comparison

Thanks....

Just set the Sony to play video in its native format; it'll then output DVD at 576 (which the Onkyo can deinterlace/upscale to 1080p), while outputting Blu-ray at 1080p (which the Onkyo will simply pass-through). Let us know how you get on!

I have to admit I've been surprised by some of the jerkiness on slow panning shots with Blu-rays with my S760. It's feeding my KRP-500a with 1080/24p (according to the on-screen display), which the TV should be fine with but with, for example, 2001, the scenes where the Jupiter ship moves slowly across the screen have noticable judder (although these are the sort of scenes where it'll be most noticable).

I don't know whether I need to change anything on the TV, like the drive mode or something, I did switch it to a different mode to stop the jerkiness with football from SkyHD, although I actually switched it to the mode they recommend for movies, not sport, as that seemed to be better, I don't know whether that's one of the options that's specific to the input, rather than a general option, I didn't think it was but I guess I'll have to check.

Clare have you got any suggestions for the settings in the S760, I looked through them, turned most things off, where I knew what they were doing but some of them aren't entirely obvious as to their purpose.

Clare, i know this is a difficult question to answer, but here goes, im considering an upgrade from the S350 to S760, in your vast knowledge would you say there would be a noticable difference in PQ on my (not exactly high-end) Philips PFL7603D?

Any thoughts much appreciated

Clare Newsome:I'm sure you'd see the difference, but not necessarily in a life-transforming way! Sonically, however, you should notice a big improvement.

That's great Clare thanks..

The scene that i noticed it on first was at the end of transformers. Its litterally the last few seconds when optimus prime is giving hi slittle closing speah if you like. When it pans across the landscape and away from him its all a little jerky. Especially noticeable when the tree enters the screen from right to left.

BUT i swapped back to the BD35 and it di exctaly tha same thing..... im sure it wouldnt / couldnt be the disc coul it? If anyone fancies trying the same scene then that would be good! Another good tester is the first couple of scenes from 30 days of night........

Not had a chance to play around with teh upscaling etc yet...............

Now if you'd said PS3.....THAT would have been blamed instantly

I cant remember what the options are on the Pioneer but ive had a similar problem on my sony. The solution was to change my FILM MODE to 1 (It directly affects movement depending on what framerate its given). 24fps was definitely smoother on that setting

anyone else tried that scene from transformers yet? Im thinking it may be my onkyo playing up??

Clare, will be comparing the upscaling tonight.

EDIT: Clare, would setting the sony to native be the same as setting it to auto as i cant seem to find a native resolution setting....... or is it the cinema conversion mode setting?? The problem with the sony leaflet (i have found) is that it instructs the user as if the user is already proper savvy with all the jargon / terms used within. I had the same issue with the acronyms used for setting up the wireless thingy.

Clare and people.

I have almost decided to go for the s760 but was wondering how it rates in comparison to the Pioneer bdp320 which also gets five stars from what hifi ? Also has anyone compared it to the LG bd390 ?

All I want for christmas is blu ray !!!

Best wishes to all.

I am using the S760 with a Panasonic TH37PX80 plasma. I have noticed that the picture doesn't quite look right, almost subdued and lacking vibrancy. It is driving me up the wall as I have played with the settings and nothing seems to help. Has anyone else experienced this? and more importantly has anyone managed to resolve it?

I'm a bit surprised, and probably disappointed, that there isn't much more of a noticeable difference. I upgraded from the Sony 350 to the Pioneer BDP 51FD, and have to say that I couldn't really see much difference. However, my wife watches the Lord of the Rings stuff a lot, and she said the picture was definitely better. My big disappointment was the time the Pioneer takes to start up. The last MOT on my car was quicker! Don't know if this is just a Pioneer thing, or if I was lucky with the Sony?
