And so we go on................looking to upgrade from the Sony 370 we have (to be dispatched to second tv room)

How does the 770 of Sony compare to the 650BD purely in terms of PQ and SQ for 2D BluRay?

I have no interest at all in 3D and the fact either can play SACD etc has little appeal also

I have been very impressed with the 370, and the on line content is also quite cool but not essential so the issue still is around PQ and SQ in 2D

Obviously if the Sony can match up/exceed the 650 then there would be £100 or so I would not need to spend, always a bonus, it's virtually impossible to dem a BD player successfully, and these two side by side may well prove to be impossible, so looking for some help here please

Thanks as always

You'll do well to find a 770. They seemed to be discontinued at the moment...

Hey

Bad news Sony only decided to sell the 770 for 10 weeks (weirdo's) Cambridge are built with audio in mind and will walk all over the sony as the 650 is a much more quality product , Sonys 570 is a tidy spinner (which you can still buy) but not in the same league as the 650 thats why its almost twice the price, i have a feeling Onkyo's new 808 player will be the new kid on the block when tested and it is out now

But answer to your question, CA 650 everytime

Cheers

some old stock still being offered for sale (apparently)

I have the 770. It plays well, although I have not compared to other models. WHF liked it in their review. My only gripe - It's a bit cheap in construction! The transport tray for the DVD's is flimsy - perhaps that is what you should expect on a budget range player. Also I cleaned the top of the shiny casing with a soft cloth and I scratched the surface! I am thinking it will look a bit tired after 12 months constant use. PQ is good though. Can't use the HD sound codecs because it requires an HDMI link to the AV amp (which I haven't got) and would have preferred a 7.1 analogue pre-out for the player.

I know exactly what you mean Sony's mid range build standards have dropped big time since the days of the QS range when you had a solid aluminium front, you have to look at the ES range to get that sort of quality now, and with such a close model range they would have been better putting the 770 in a more quality full metal seperate style chassis as the days of old Sony's and still the standard by others

I recently bought a Sony 760 from Play, com and I am delighted with its sound and picture quality and its has a quality feel as well. If the 770 is even better than this you will be delighted! Incidently, my local Sony Shop uses a 760 with their 40" 903 tv. Other tvs have the 370 and 570 and Sky +HD.

Best Wishes

Chris

PS best £100 I spent!

I've had a 650BD for about six months, and play blu-rays through to our Sony HW15 HD projector with Pioneer LX53 receiver - absolutely superb - great picture and motion. Upscaling DVDs seems excellent too. Very good build quality, and very fast loading, and excellent sound (just upgraded my fronts and centre to B&W CM8s to make the most of it).

has anyone worked out how to stop and start a Blu-ray in the same place (i.e. mid-way through a film), on the BDP S770. Every time I stop the film for a break or something, I end up having to go from the start again to find my place. It's a pain.

Seems a bit strange, especially the other OP's comments re 10 weeks availability

Anyone from Sony world out there who can comment??

Thanks for all the good comments on the 650 BD

Anybody know if Sony are going to replace the 5000ES with a mid price effort {clearly not the 770 :))}

??

Use pause. Even if I come back to my 370 12 hours later, it'll still fire up in the same place...

thank you I presume after a few seconds on pause, the system turns off? I will try it.

It depends on the blu-ray disc. Some allow resume from where you last left, & some don't.
