Hi, my 20 year old subwoofer gave up the ghost, i have managed without one for a while, but now i debating on getting a new one, or would floorstander be a better option in a small room, i use QA 2020i fronts, and 2010i rears, and whatever the centre is called, my room is 16 feet x 11.

If your system is mainly for movies and even if its not - speakers can be ok and have decent freq extension but most dont do lfe bass.

I think a film OST is about 50% bass in terms of the importance of it so a sub or 2 or 4 is always going to add a dimension to a system speakers are unlikely to - with some exceptions.

However not all subs will perform better than speakers in the LFE bass area so best to do some research, get a good idea for what you can get for your budget.

Cheap is not better with subs, its not an area I think you should scrimp on - but you dont need to spend quarter of a million bucks either.

Do some research as there are a lot of options available, some less obvious but worth investigsting
