Various retailers have the 80GB for sale now with a release date of 22 August. Alas, no sign of it being the slim version rumoured earlier in the year. I understand they have just doubled the HDD - unless anyone knows to the contrary.

Ah just found that version... maybe I saw some geeky photoshop attempts at what a new version of the PS3 would look like? Not sure it was a while back.

Think I'll hold on a little longer though, maybe they are just trying to get rid of stock of the larger cased version (although seems unlikely).

There is no slim PS3 and the 80gb sku is only launching in Europe on Friday. If Sony do launch a slim version it will be in Japan 6 months before we get it here, don't you know we're the country cousins here in Europe !!

The 'slim' version you may have seen are a few fake shots that some magazines have run...and then they've arrived on the internet of course.

Whether or not we can expect a transformed PS3 is up for debate - it happened with PSone and PS2 but only to appeal to a much younger demographic at a much later stage in the life cycle of the console...

I'm more concerned of the fact I could buy the PS3 now but it could be outdated by the slim one in a couple of months, and that product could stand the test of time.

If anything a slim version would perhaps have a slimmed down spec and, importantly, be designed for a different market entirely - the PSone looked like a Fisher Price toy...
