SkyHD & Denon 1910, Dolby Digital Config Confusion...

Hi All,

Right I'm happy to admit, I'm probably doing something stupid here but after scouring the internet I thought I'd post and see if one of you boffins can point out my short falling!

I got myself a Denon 1910 with Kef KHT3005SE's for a chrimbo present from me to me (what a thoughtful gift
emotion-5.gif
) at a very reasonable price (lot cheaper that the B&W's let say).

So I've hooked it all up with my SkyHD, Sonos & PS3. The SkyHD is connected using HDMI 1, and Optical 1 as I read somewhere that SkyHD isn't able to output DD using HDMI, the PS3 is connected to HDMI2, and the Sonos is using Optical 2.

I've used Input Assign to configure the settings above so that Sky is using 01 - 01, the PS3 is using 02 - 00 and the Sonos uses 00 - 02 (zero's indicate nothing on the columns). I've then set the SkyHD settings from Stereo to Dolby. And tuned into a Movie Channel which had DD in the program synopsis (SkyMovies HD for example). My understanding would then be that I should change the Input Mode to digital so that it knows to only listen to the digital audio signal, not the standard stereo received from the HDMI cable. However when I do this I lose all sound. My PS3 however is outputting to Dolby D and in doing so changes the front display (My poor neighbours must think there is an actual war going on when COD Modern Warfare is on
emotion-10.gif
)

I've only connected the Sonos using the optical cable (not coax), and I've tried moving the Input Assignment round to ensure it wasn't a faulty port on the amp (not that I would expect such a thing). But from my troubleshooting it looks like it’s the SkyHD box or my incompetence. However I'd really appreciate if someone who has set this up could confirm before I consider speaking to sky!!

If you need any more information please let me know, and thanks in advance.

I've got the 1910 and I'm getting DD from my Sky HD box... Which Optical connection are you connecting the Optical lead to? Have you matched the Input Assign to the correct input?

Hi Pindi, I've connected the SkyHD box to HDMI1 (marked as DVD on the back of the unit) and Optical 1 (marked Opt-1 (TV)). I then went into Input Assign and configured...
HDMI Digi Comp
SkyHD 01 01 --

Is this how you have added it?

Try This, Simple but may work:

Open the back flap of the remote Use the Input Mode button (just below the yellow 0) keep pressing until it shows

I.Mode : Digital (not auto)

This may do it.

Hi Dave,

I've got my Sky HD box connected to the Sat/Cbl HDMI input, I think it's number 3. It may be worth trying that, the rest is exactly the same though.

Thanks Mark, but when I do that, I loose all sound but still have picture(as if the digital signal from the optical cable is not valid). Its only on Auto or HDMI do I receive sound, albeit stereo which I put via Dolby PLII.

Thanks Pindi, at least I know I'm doing it right. Think it's now a case of swapping cables out etc and hoping for some proper surround sound films!!

Couple of quick checks:

1.I assume your are using an optical cable - so you have selected O1, if it is a box with a coaxial connection, then it should say C1.

2. Are you getting a red light out of the back of your box, when the cable is not connected.

3. Are you getting a red light out of the optical cable once it is connected to the back of the sky box

Nice checks Mark. In the office right now (working hard as you can see

) but will check when I get back to the flat.

Thanks for your quick responses.

Not really, you just need to set it to stereo & dolby as he has done, so it knows you can receive a DD signal.

What is important though, if you have the new skyHD EPG is to press the green button, so it saves the settings, then select.

I don't think you had to do this with the previous EPG, can't remember

Hi Davey

I also treated myself to the AVR1910 and have it connected the same as you and all seems fine. DD films on Sky movies HD show as DD on display. After youve pressed input mode button on remote try pressing STD button and see if that helps?

Hey All,

Right I've worked it out, however I'm not a happy chappy
emotion-9.gif
...

Turns out it appears my optical input 1 isn't working. After you all confirmed I was doing it right (thanks again!) I ran through switching around cables and inputs, and basically...

Sonos via Optical 1 using two seperate cables neither work
SkyHD via Optical 1 using two seperate cables not showing Dolby Digital (remembered to change input assign)
Sonos via Optical 2 using two seperate cables both working
SkyHD via Optical 2 using two seperate cables both showing Dolby Digital when digital selected.

Pretty shocked that I managed to buy a duff Denon, first time with the brand and it winning WH product of the year, guess there has to be a % failure with every make even if it is a very low one.

Thanks everyone for your prompt response, it gave me the confidence to work out it was the amp.

Good to hear you've found the problem. I remember having a similar problem though, but it somehow started to work again!

Yeah I'm pretty suprised by a port like this being faulty. My retailer have advised to send it back to them, but before I do so I think I'll perform a reset on it to ensure its not just having a wobly!

Update - Reset the microprocessor as detailed in the manual as a final last hope, but still not getting anything via Optical Input 1 either via the Sonos or SkyHD...

Guess its a return, hopefully it doesn't take too long, really loving the unit, suddenly can't live without it haha!
