My tv is the same in being 720p and I have my skyhd set to 1080i.

I understand that this is what Sky broadcast at so any other setting requires the skyhd box to scale appropriately.

I could not tell any real difference between the 720p and the1080i setting, so I have had it set to 1080i since the SkyHD launch.

I feel that my TV should do a better job with picture adjusting that the SkyHD box.

Also if you set it to automatic you may get an annoying blue screen between channel changes as the resolution changes.

However, if your TV or receiver does a better job of upscaling SD channels than the (relatively undistinguished) Sky box, you need to select Auto and put up with the pause when changing channel.

thanks digigriffin. the reason for asking is that some people say that 720p is better than 1080i. anyway, I can't see any difference as well.

Set your SkyHD box output to AUTO not 720p or 1080i as the scalers inside the SkyHD box are frankly not very good and your TV will do a much better job upscaling SD material to the native resolution of you TV.

The vast majority of HD content is transmited at 1080i and when you switch to a HD channel the box will automatically output at this resolution or if it were transmited at 720p output at that resoultion. The only downside with setting the box to AUTO is a slight loss of picture for about a second as your TV re-adjusts to the either lower or higher resolution that the HD box is outputting.

On Sky, ALL HD material is broadcast at 1080i regardless of the original format it was filmed in, and all SD material is broadcast at 576i.

The i is very important because it indicates that the material is all in interlaced format. To be shown correctly on a digital display this needs to be deinterlaced to progressive format.

If you set the box to Auto, it outputs 1080i for HD and 576P for SD.

If you set the box to 720P it outputs 720P for both SD and HD

If you set the box to 1080i it outputs 1080i for both SD and HD.

There is no doubt that the scaler in the box is pants but the deinterlacer is far, far worse! Typically this means that the least compromised output (even on 720-768 line displays) is to output 1080i for all material. This means a double scaling but avoids the introduction of deinterlacing artefacts which no display could get rid of.
