Sky HD & Onkyo TX-SR606 setup

I have connected the Sky HD box to the SR606 using both the CBL/SAT HDMI input and an optical cable because I read that the HDMI output from the Sky HD box does not support multi-channel audio.  However, I can't see how to set the Onkyo to know to use the optical input - as far as I can tell from the display, it makes no difference whether the optical cable is connected or not - irrespective of whether I'm watching a normal stereo or a programme with multi-channel audio.

 Can anyone give me some advice on how to set my system up correctly?

The mode on the Onkyo must be changed to DVD or CD depending on which of the two optical inputs used. I have mine connected to the upper one and receive sound on the DVD mode.

ÿI think they are assignable. I initially assigned mine as DVD ( as it was initially connected to my DVD player.
