I am looking at upgrading my tv, dvd player and sky+ and was wondering if i should pay extra for a 1080p tv or not?

Basically i understand that sky HD broardcasts in 720p or 1080i and not 1080p. So i was wondering exactly how much benefit a 1080p vs 720p/1080i tv will give me for sky? Will a 1080p tv upscale a 1720p/1080i signal direct from my sky HD box?

Thanks in anticipation

It will upscale the picture. Since all HDTVs are progressive, even if you only get an HD Ready TV (720p), this will be downscaling a 1080i broadcast as well as deinterlacing it, so in theory, the 1080p TV should be better as this is just deinterlacing. It's going to depend a lot on the TVs ability to do this though so the picture quality will differ between makes of TV rather than whether it's 1080p or 720p.
Whether 1080p should be a concern or not should really come down to a few other factors like viewing distance, size of the TV etc. Whatever happens though, you should really go by what will produce the best picture. For example, Pioneer is renowned for making 720p sets that have a much better picture quality than most 1080p sets.
