The 1840 cost nearly 40% more than the 1540 so it's a poor show if they aren't better headphones. But due to the law of deminishing returns they probably won't sound 40% better, even if we for a second ignore the fact that you can't quantify sound quality as a percentage in any case.

I should have memtioned before the prices are the same. Having looked on there webite they are bothed priced at £499 or on amazon both round £400. why is this?

The original 1840 price was $700, 1540 was $500.

The 1540 is a dark sound with fairly strong (not bloated) bass, the 1840 is a more neutral sound with lean bass. I found the 1540 treble to be recessed, but the 1840 has an actual bass defect. Other people found the same thing. Listen to the opening drum beats from Jennifer Warnes' Rock You Gently, and then try it on any other headphone.

Bass defect on the 1840 does not sound good. would u say i better of with the 1540 then?

The 1540 has a good reputation, so I only mention 'dark' and 'recessed' so you can check on that when you try them. The build quality is very good.
