Should there be guidelines for recommending equipment?

Basically the discussion is one over informed opinion, where you have heard the device in question, and uninformed, where you have not.

Would you vote for party x in and election because all your friends said everyone else said they were good though they didn't personally know their policies? I wouldn't, but then maybe I'm out of step with the rest of the world.

And to those who believe basing an opinion based on hearsay is as valid as real experience of the item in question, what would your reaction be if, having recommended something right, left and centre, you found that, when you came to hear it, it was actually rubbish?

Your friends are entitled to say what they like. Whether or not you follow what they say is up to you. I really don't understand your point; are you suggesting that anyone who gives an opinion should be required to provide evidence to somehow back it up?

Well, that is one of the fundamentals of mankind's quest for knowledge, developments in science, exploration of the planet etc etc.

This forum is no where near as bad as others where recommendations are regularly just the name of the infavour product of the moment.

If all my friends, whose values and judgments I trust we all to recommend something I have no experience of, I would certainly consider it.

One of mankind's other fundamental quests is related to the pleasure principle. Give me a developmental scientific argument to determine whether or not Arcam is better than Cyrus or that either of them prefer PMC speakers with Fugazi pumping out of them at a low to moderate volume but knowing that Joanna Newsome is next up

Possibly not remotely related to the argument - unless you can prove otherwise, that is!
