At present I own a Hitachi C36 WF10N behemoth of a telly and have had over 9 years of pleasure from its excellent CRTV pictures. But even though it is still performing as good as the first day it was switched on, I want to move into the 21st century and take advantage of Hi Definition TV and Blue Ray and so after reading reviews and comments until my eyes have bled, I have decided that the Panasonic 42G10B is to be my telly of choice.
However, there is a little problem.
When I bought the Hitachi many moons ago I already had my Hi-Fi floorstanding speakers (Mission 753 Freedoms)and decided to also use them for my surround system and added a Mission 75c centre and a pair of 77 rears. Of course because they were not made as AV speakers the 753's were not shielded. So of course I soon discovered that a big Catho Ray Tube and closely sited speaker magnets don't mix (purple is not a pretty colour), and quickly had to *** down to a local engineering firm and have some 3 mil plate made up to stick betweeen the left speaker and the side of the TV. I know that sounds a bit Steptoe and Son having sheet metal in your living room but once i'd spray painted it black you hardly notice it was there, mainly because the Hitachi is so deep...honest.
Anyway, as I said I'm soon to be the proud owner of a Panasonic 42G10 but for a while (until the living room is gutted and re-decorated when it can go on a wall) it will still have to sit in the same place the old Hitachi occupies at the moment, which also means the speaker will still be stood next to it. There really is nowhere else they can go.
So, will the Speaker still need the shielding or are plasma tv's being totally different animals to CRTV's not have any problems with an unsheilded speaker stood next to it? If it does still have to be shielded then the iron plate will definately stand out like a sore thumb.
I know many of you would have replaced the speaker system by now but i've been happy with my 753 Freedoms for listening to my Hi-Fi and if I replace them, then the rest have to be replaced in order for the them to match tonally and I simply don't have the money to do that and get a new telly.
As always your expert advice would be much appreciated.
