It seems that Sevenoaks is having a rough time. It is now the turn of their Edinburgh's branch to close down.

You need sometimes to be at the right place at the right time. All the better for me last Friday when I passed by the Grassmarket. Here is what I grabbed:

Yamaha YSP-40D Sound Projector for £600,

Yamaha DVD-S2700 for £400,

Arcam Logo subwoofer for £300,

and all the cables at half price!

There is still a very nice Marantz DV7001 at £450. That's not bad at all.

Seems things are tough in the hi-fi retail market just now, and franchises really seem to be suffering.

I'm not far from Edinburgh, but as a former retailer I have a tough time going in to shops that are having closing down sales. Just feels a bit wrong! I guess they need the money, but I know how awful it feels to sell things off at stupid prices.

I could do with a few bits and bobs, but it's a bit of a moral dilemma for me.

Thanks for the tip-off though, looks like you got some great deals, enjoy

Probably not helped by the credit crunch and the huge market in online shopping. There's just no way they can compete with internet store prices. It's a shame as you normally tend to get better service and of course a proper demo at a good retail shop. I think we will be seeing alot more specialists going the same way in the near future.

I agree. So many people have demos, taking up lots of time and getting sound advice and then go off and buy on line at the cheaper price. If the shops all disappear how on earth are we ever going to see, touch, listen and view...?

True indeed. I was at the BADA (British Audio-Visual Dealers Association) conference yesterday, and this is one of the many issues that concerns them. But the internet is here to stay, and human nature being what it is...

I've already rambled at length in the Comet thread in the shop section!

I'd like to wring the neck of whoever termed it the 'credit crunch'.

The BBC news last night was revelling in the fact that the economy 'might' be going belly up as housing companies lay off, Gordy loses precious stamp duty and an employer straw poll indicated economic lack of optimism.

I for one will be investing in another CD player soon.

I do feel sorry for the franchisees of Sevenoaks, several of which (including my local in Newcastle) have bit the dust.

Collectus:If the shops all disappear how on earth are we ever going to see, touch, listen and view...?Unfortunately most people are price driven and couldn't care less about comparing other products and getting value for their own money - they class vlaue as a good deal. Many just don't have or won't spare the time.

Sadly, many more dealers will disappear before things get any better, which may mean the loss of some good dealers.
