I've just bought a new TV, but when I got it home I realised it didn't have any audio out ports, just optial out.

Now, I have a 2.1 speaker system that I connected to my old TV by way of a phono cable from the Sub into the audio out on my old TV.

The 2.1 speaker system came with another cable, a phono to 3.5mm jack, which I presume is to connect it to the headphone jack on a TV.

The question is, is there a noticable degredation in sound quality when connecting the system up to the headphone jack opposed to an audio out via phono cables? I think there is, but I'm a novice at this and I'm not sure if I'm just telling myself it doesn't sound as good.

It's far from a definitive answer, but I wouldn't expect it to be as good quality as dedicated audio outs.

Whether it's acceptable is another thing though. Hook it up and see what you think. Worst case scenario, you could buy a cheap-ish DAC.
