hello i think i have cracked it i have a HDMI from theatre to TV, i have a HDMI from virgin to TV.

i have also digital optical from theatre to vrigin.

is that correct?

does any one know if i need to change any settings in my virgin for the sound?

gypsyboy:whats dd?

Dolby Digital (5.1) surround sound. And yes, the old V+ HD box carries DD over 5.1 for HD channels (this may be switched off if the Optical Override option is enabled - can't remember)

Dolby Digital!

As the_lhc says you dont need the optical cable as VM boxes can output dd 5.1 via HDMI,unlike Sky boxes.

Jinx!

thanks for your replies.

how ?i just unplugged the optical and i had no soun.

it all seems to work ok i think.

it does seem a bit tricky i have a sc-bt200 panasonic home theatre and samsung le40b550 tv.

new virgin box yesterday to.

Oh, one of those? In which case you don't have any HDMI inputs do you? You'll need the optical connection then. Don't know if you need to change anything on the Virgin box to output DD via the optical connection though.

This is why people should state what their equipment is FIRST, so this sort of confusion doesn't arise...

Yes, set the "Optical Override" option in the Display & Audio settings. Normal (non 5.1 DD) sound will go to TV (via HDMI). 5.1 sound will go via optical to amp. No sound will go to TV for 5.1 sound if override set.

thanks and sorry for the confusion.

so do i have my system set up right?

Sounds like it.
