Hi there. I'm in the process of setting up a home cinema system. I have the following equipment.

Playstation 3

Samsung Series 6 LCD TV (not sure which model)

Sony STRDH800 Receiver

I'm wondering if I should run the Playstation's Sond and video thought the Receiver and then onto the TV or if I should connect the PS3 to the TV directly with HDMI but run the sound from the PS3 to the receiver with an digital audio cable. Help?

The first way, you won't get HD audio with Blu-Ray otherwise.

You won't get HD sound unless you connect the PS3 to the receiver via HDMI.

Not really the right forum to ask but I will anyway.

How badly does quality degrade with length of HDMI cable?

You might get issues as you approach ten meters, depending on the cable quality, below that you won't notice any difference between two otherwise identical cables of the same length.
