Hi,

I currently intend to upgrade my system to the following, Amplifier - Roksan Candy K2, Speakers - KEF R500. I currently have an ARCAM CD73 CD player but would like to upgrade but after this purchase funds might be a bit streached. What I was thinking of doing was buying a secondhand ARCAM CD192. It has got rave reviews but the only downside is that it has been discontinued so I am a little worried about servicing and repairs. Could you please offer advice here, either whether to stop with the ARCAM CD192 or else by a new CD, but which one. I need to inprove on the ARCAM CD73 that I have, albeit this is a really good player but I don't think it will match the speaker/Amplifier upgrade I am planning. I like most types of music but mainly Prog Rock/Rock and Pop.

Forgot to mention my current equipment is - Marantz PM6002, ARCAM CD73, Monitor Audio BR5, AKG702.

I upgraded to a used CD192 from a Marantz CD63 KI, and can recommend it. Not sure how it would compare to your existing CD73 though.

it uses a Sony transport so in theory spares shouldn't be a problem, Arcam also do fixed price repairs at £225 I think.

Not sure where your are but you are welcome to listen to mine if you're close enough.

Upgrade the rest first and then think about the CDP. I had the CD73T with my Leema and sounded fine. It's a very good CDP for the money.

To answer your initial question, no, I'd avoid the 192. It is a fantastic sounding CDP but it is long in the tooth now (first came out in about 2003) and any s/hand CDP you'll have no guarantee as regards lasers and transport mechanism.

If you're goin s/hand route look at Arcams CD17 or CD37... and what about Roksan's own Kandy CDP?

would an arcam dac be a good purchase? use the cd73 as a transport ?

i ask as this could be an option for myself, if this would see any improvements.

Depends what you need to use the dac for. If it is purely for music playback (using the 73 as transport) then you're probably better off with a dedicated CDP. If, however, you want to stream music it'll be the ideal companion.
