hi any advice on this please, i have Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 speakers and i love the fine detail they produce, but i am wondering if i half fill the stand with sand will this improve even more or will it deaden the fine detail?

thanks

Filling the stand will have two effects. The first is to add mass, providing a more stable platform for the loudspeaker to do its job. The second is that you will be filling a resonant cavity and damping any energy transferred from the speaker to the stand.

Both effects should allow you to hear more of the speaker.

Make sure you use kiln-dried sand (no moisture) and fill a bag inside the stand. That way it's easy to remove is you don't like the effect.

Is there never a technical reason to run some speakers on empty stands or am I confusing the concept with low mass solid stands?

There's no problem running with empty stands at all. If it sounds OK to you, then it is. Filling stands with sand adds mass and damps any resonances set up in any hollow sections. You don't have to use sand. You could use small polystyrene balls or packing material. That would damp resonances without adding mass.

There are some stand designs such as the original Epos ES14 and 11 stands that are of a light open-frame design.

The main job of a stand is to provide a stable platform for the speaker to work. After that aesthetics come into play too.

The sand thing is a cheap tweak. If you don't like the effect, then it hasn't cost you an arm and a leg.

thank you all for your help - the stands do feel a bit light and if it also improves the sound i will go for it, sometime in the future i might buy a different stand like the Partington Trophy but for now i will fill my apollo's with the sand and see how it goes.

thanks again

Hey, if you don't like what it does, you can always throw the sand into the garden and improve soil drainage! :)
