Samsung Sky box to yamaha ax763 amp

Hello - help needed please.

I finally got sky and connected it up to my amp via the hdmi cable supplied. The installer said I would need to get an optical lead to get dolby digital. No problem I thought. BUT to my suprise it is giving sound though all speakers and it appears to be true surrond (not just amp splitting the signal)

Do I need this optical cable to get better sound?

EDIT - looks from another of todays thread that I do need that extra cable - the sorround must be being added by the amp?

I have 863 and Samsung HD box. Connectod to TV via HDMI and to AMP via Optical. When connected previously by HDMI direct to AMP It did give sound through all speakers but its not DD.
